Horrendous. This could go on forever. Johnson has said it is "very wrong" ! The government have done nothing to help.

Sorry, not spying charges but ‘propaganda activities against the regime’.

SkepticalCat · 26/04/2021 14:25

Poor woman and her family.

I had been wondering what had happened after her sentence had ended, but was charged again, and kept meaning to find out what had happened.

I am so shocked and saddened by this.

Chatanooga1 · 26/04/2021 14:28

She’s been given another year for participating in a protest in front of the Iranian Embassy in London in 2009.

The regime does not tolerate any kind of criticism and it seems her actions have been foolish in thinking she could speak out against it and not suffer the consequences.

Yes it’s awful that they lock people up for speaking out against them but that’s their awful draconian laws and she must have known that if she is Iranian?

NicolaDunsire · 26/04/2021 14:35

Oh that’s such sad news.

Chatanooga1 the Guardian podcast series, Today in Focus, did an episode on her in early March. It’s only 30 mins long, have a listen if you’re interested.

JanFebAnyMonth · 26/04/2021 14:39

Yes @Mincepiesallyearround

NicolaDunsire · 26/04/2021 14:45

IIRC (I might be mis remembering - it was from the podcast I mentioned above) France and America have done exchanges of prisoners for their nationals being held in similar ways to Nazanin. But the U.K. won’t negotiate.

OnlyInYourDreams · 26/04/2021 14:50

Tbh I think it’s impossible to comment on the case because the Iranian authorities haven’t been forthcoming re the evidence. It’s not possible to know one way or the other whether she is innocent or guilty, But I feel desperately sorry for her family.

Her daughter presumably won’t even remember her any more...

Thank you. I don’t read the Guardian as they are left wing biased but I will look it up and also do some more research on other media sites.

I was curious about the posts and wondered if she used to be a poster on Mumsnet.

HannibalHayes · 26/04/2021 14:54

And yet people will still go out and vote for "good old Boris". He's doing his best, apparently...

JanFebAnyMonth · 26/04/2021 18:18

Doesn’t the fact that Iran haven’t released the evidence they say they have against her tell you how likely it is that she’s actually guilty?

PeterNiss · 26/04/2021 18:45

What are you each doing about it though?

I don't hear a thing.

JanFebAnyMonth · 26/04/2021 19:34

I’ve signed petitions about her situation in the past, do you have suggestions for current actions?

TSBelliot · 26/04/2021 19:42

Chatanooga1 I would think the definition of foolish is presuming a fair trail, even within the parameters of Iranian ‘justice’, when evidence is not disclosed and when Amnesty note frequent inequities.

Yes, it’s awful how they rule Iran. I’ve read more about her and whilst I am against their draconian laws and abhorrent punishments it does appear that she spoke out against the regime and has suffered the consequences of their wrath.

It’s so sad that she went back there and couldn’t have arranged for her parents to meet her and family either in the UK or another country for a holiday because once you leave to live elsewhere but return for any reason to Iran it looks like they are gunning for you and will bring charges against you no matter how unreasonable they seem.

KateWinsome · 26/04/2021 20:04

Gabriella knows her mother. She remained in Iran with Nazanin's parents for several years, visiting her mum in prison twice a week. She returned to England when it was time to start school. Since Nazanin was released on house arrest she has spoken to Gabriella on zoom daily. The Revolutionary Guard haven't broken the mother-daughter bond.

Her husband's devotion is extraordinary.

Nazanin travelled freely between the UK and Iraq for many years until the Revolutionary Guard decided to make her a political pawn.

TSBelliot · 26/04/2021 20:07

It’s political - it was her dual nationality with Britain that made her the target. What she has done is pretty much irrelevant even thinking that’s how it works is an approach with too much integrity.

ProbablyGryffindor · 26/04/2021 20:16

This is heartbreaking. It’s so hard to find updates on her case. After her court case, it seemed to go quiet whilst waiting to see what they’d throw at her next.

I agree, her husband is incredible. I can’t wait until the family are reunited.

lazylump72 · 26/04/2021 20:25

Shocking and utterly senseless...I really dont have the words to describe how much I feel for the whole family.

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 26/04/2021 20:32

It's incredibly upsetting, I heard of another duel citizen recently that was being held but couldn't remember his name so I googled. It brought up Wikipedia which stated that Iran has arrested at least 30 people with duel citizenship over the last 2 years which just shows how Nazanin is sadly just the tip of the iceberg.

List of foreign nationals detained in Iran

I worry how long they will drag this out for.

MrsRockAndRoll · 26/04/2021 20:50

Heartbreaking for her & her family.

The government should have applied pressure to help

Rhannion · 26/04/2021 22:00

Iran has been chosen to lead the UN Commission on the status of women! This is a country where women are buried up to their shoulders and stoned... it’s fucking medieval

Kitkat151 · 26/04/2021 22:15

I just saw it on bbc news....so so sad....1 year and a years travel ban....so does that mean she’s stuck there until 2023?

Bloodybridget · 26/04/2021 22:24

Awful news. Ironic that she's now being punished for "spreading propaganda against the regime in Iran"; the Iranian government is doing a great job of maintaining its own dreadful reputation.

Nonmaquillee · 26/04/2021 22:28

It's devastating news. I also swore loudly when I heard it. My heart goes out to her and her beautiful daughter.
