Do kids’ bumped teeth always go discoloured?

Just that really. My four year old banged his front tooth very hard on a roundabout (my fault for pushing him too fast when he wasn’t holding on, argh) and two days later he’s still saying it’s too sore to bite hard things. It doesn’t seem to be wobbly but he won’t really let me look.

Is it inevitable that it will go discoloured from the damage, or can they bump their baby teeth hard and still have them stay white?

I know it’s only a baby tooth so it will fall out in a few years anyway. I just feel very, very guilty and I dread the tooth discolouring as a permanent reminder.....

DS2 bashed one lower tooth aged three which discoloured and then reverted back to normal a few weeks later.
He then fell face first on a tiled floor the following year and badly based his front two upper teeth. The did blacken and stayed that way until they fell out aged 8 or 9.
I'm sure there are thousand of cases of bumped teeth with no issues though. DS got used to smiling for photos with his mouth shut!

My DD knocked one of hers back colliding with a friend's head but it didn't discolour

It depends on if it's knocked up or in/out. Knocked up is worse and can effect upper teeth. Tap gently to check if moving. We were told to keep an eye on gum in case of infection and when it came it was a tiny pimple. Unfortunately a year later, tooh then grey, tooth had to go (aged 4) to save adult tooth. So keep a good eye.

I don't think it's inevitable, but my son bashed his tooth on a table when he was about 5. It went grey after a week or so and stayed that way for a few months, then went white again, although the dentist remarked that the back of it was still dark. His adult tooth came through just perfect with no issues.

Thanks all - sounds as though I’d better take him to the dentist to have it checked over.

when my Ds was 5 he was on a swing seat and bashed his two front teeth so hard he bent them right back.
He pushed them forward with his tongue on the way to the hospital we were told they would probably go black or they would fall out in the next few days.
His teeth didn't go black and he kept them for another 2 years before they fell out due to his adult teeth coming through.

My DC's tooth was not discoloured by an impact but it was a bit of a case of "wait and see".
Good idea to go to the dentist. Smile
