Chicken one day after it’s ‘use by’ date

So would you cook a chicken that was one day older than it’s use by date?

I don’t have anything else in and don’t have a huge food budget to replace it. Not sure how I managed to allow it to expire. What’s the consensus? Use or bin?

I wouldn’t. In general I stick to “use by” dates and ignore “best before”.

What does it smell like?

I probably wouldn't eat it but if you don't have anything else, you could try cooking it. You'll know by the smell.

OneRankSuperior · 25/04/2021 16:51

Would use it if it were me

Does it look and smell okay?

If yes, then I’d cook it no problem.

Shinyletsbebadguys · 25/04/2021 16:52

If it looks and smells ok then use it (I have very much been there when the money is not there for a replacement I sympathise ).

The chicken doesn't know what date it is and there is always some leeway built in.

Twickerhun · 25/04/2021 16:55

What does odd chicken smell like? It had a bit of a smell when I opened the packed that I think was just because it was in a vacuum pack with a garlic based stuffing.

OP posts:
Twickerhun · 25/04/2021 16:55

The garlic is overpowering really. Would off chicken trump garlic? Or smell like garlic?!

Twickerhun · 25/04/2021 16:56

Looks fine

firedog · 25/04/2021 16:56

I wouldn't give it a second thought unless it looked off

idontlikealdi · 25/04/2021 16:57

If it was off you'd know about it, off chicken is beyond rank!

Roussette · 25/04/2021 16:57

I wouldn't hesitate

EdithGrantham · 25/04/2021 16:57

I think there are certain things that makes chicken off that you can't smell anyway so it could smell fine but be bad. One day though should be ok.

Cindy87 · 25/04/2021 16:58

I always go by smell and the smell of rotting chicken is pretty unmistakable

DinosaurDiana · 25/04/2021 16:58

No, meat I always chuck. Anything else gets the sniff test.

Floralnomad · 25/04/2021 16:59

The only time I look at sell by / use by dates is when I’m in a shop , once it’s in my house I go by smell and what it looks like ,,so I would cook it .

Choccorocco · 25/04/2021 17:01

I’d eat it if it looks and smells ok, but I would check that it is really thoroughly cooked.

GreenandPinkFlowers · 25/04/2021 17:02

I would, and occasionally do use chicken over its date. The smell of rotting chicken will make you throw up in your mouth a little bit. You'll know if it's off.

kittenkipping · 25/04/2021 17:03

I'd cook it without a second thought tbh.

FairyDust123456 · 25/04/2021 17:03

I wouldn't risk it, food poisoning is awful and I just don't think it's worth it.

Silverfly · 25/04/2021 17:05

I would.

purplecorkheart · 25/04/2021 17:07

I would cook it once it smelt ok with in 24 hours of it expire date. Just make sure that it is cooked very well. If you get a bad smell while it is cooking throw it away. The smell of off chicken cooking is a smell you will never forget. I probably would cook it separately to everything else so if they are off you will not have to throw away everything.

Twickerhun · 25/04/2021 17:36

Ok I’m cooking it - separate to anything else.

I’ll report back if it was a mistake!

@Twickerhun did you survive? Hmm

Twickerhun · 27/04/2021 18:31

Yes thanks!! All good :) no sickness and it tasted yummy.

That’s a relief Grin
