Should I see a GP urgently about this?

It’s a strange one because I have flipped like a switch. In the last 48 hours I’ve started sleeping and not functioning properly.

Last night I had my favourite takeaway, it arrived and I put the pizza on my lap. I took a few bites. The next thing I know I’ve woken up, on my friend’s sofa, and it’s 11.30pm! The pizza arrive at 8.45pm. I have absolutely never fallen asleep like that before.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m one of those people who enjoys a nice sleep BUT I have never fallen asleep watching a film or sitting down, for example. I’d take myself off if I wanted to go to bed. I can honestly say I’ve never ‘just fallen asleep’.

What scares me is I don’t remember feeling particularly tired just before I fell asleep at my friend’s, it was like I was given some sort of shot to sedate me. So strange

I am having trouble with exhaustion that’s beyond anything I’ve ever known. For example, I’m so exhausted I cannot get the right words out, or think properly passed basic tasks. The tiredness sometimes gets so bad that I feel my eyes closing whilst sitting up!

Do I need an urgent GP appointment to check for anaemia or can I leave it a week or so and see if it’s the same? Thank you

I would get yourself checked. It may be that you have b12 deficiency. Always best to get checked out

PlanterGents · 25/04/2021 10:28

Our Thank you - I have spoken to H with my eyes shutting today and it really freaked him out. It’s so bad that I think I cannot safely drive

Of course you need to phone talk to GP. And no, don't drive in the meantime

I’m a GP. Yes, you need to speak to your GP on Monday, and I would expect they’ll want to do blood tests for causes of fatigue.

If it’s getting worse in the meantime, particularly if you lose consciousness and your DH can’t rouse you, then you need A&E today.

PlanterGents · 25/04/2021 11:06

Thanks all. My DS has sleep issues, doesn’t settle during the night (awake and active), as he has no switch off it seems. He’s got ASD but yes I’ve been tired before, but never this tired - His sleep hasn’t changed.

However, I’m sure doctors will put it down to me not actually sleeping very much anyway Sad

I've experienced similar recently, OP. Maybe not quite as severe as your case though. Over the last few weeks I've found myself nodding off when I'm sitting up. I'm usually woken quickly by my head lolling but one day last week I woke and an hour had passed! I can't think of anything that's changed eg, amount of sleep, diet etc. I've found it strange because it's not something I've experienced before.

LabiaMinoraPissusFlapus · 25/04/2021 11:15

Sorry to ask this but you couldn't have been drugged could you? Could your drink have been spiked?

FATEdestiny · 25/04/2021 11:20

My first thought is are you pregnant?

I was this level of exhausted in the first few weeks after conception. One night (only 7 days after conceiving, so a week before my period was due) I got home from work, went upstairs to get changed at 5.30pm because I'd arranged to meet friends for dinner. Fell asleep while getting undressed and did not wake until 8am the next morning!

Aknifewith16blades · 25/04/2021 11:22

Do you have a carbon monooxide monitor in your home?

LittleRa · 25/04/2021 11:26

Did your friend try to wake/rouse you?

PlanterGents · 25/04/2021 11:37

Thank you for the support Flowers

In truth I feel a bit spacey so it’s nice just to get it off my chest.

My friend didn’t try to wake me, no. Doubt she would’ve spiked my drink

My daughter passed away due to extreme prematurity in January. Periods okay since but don’t think I’m pregnant. Not had sex at the right times etc. But worth ruling out!

We have a carbon monoxide monitor but it’s kept in the airing cupboard because H says he can’t stand it going off every few seconds because he’s vaping? I thought that would’ve just been the smoke alarm but I think he said both

HollowTalk · 25/04/2021 11:38

Could you ask a pharmacist for a diabetes blood test today?

ThisIsSimplyBeyond · 25/04/2021 11:41

Carbon monoxide monitor shouldn't be going off from vape-stream - so that urgently needs looking into

rainbowstardrops · 25/04/2021 11:43

I'd definitely get checked out if this isn't normal for you.
I often fall asleep sitting up but I sleep quite badly at times so I wouldn't be worried but it's not normal for you so get checked out.

Embracelife · 25/04/2021 11:45

Don't put it in a cupboard!!!

ViperAtTheGatesOfDawn · 25/04/2021 11:46

Vaping won't set off a CO monitor, that's something worth checking.

romdowa · 25/04/2021 11:46

I vape right next to my carbon monoxide alarm as does my partner and it never ever goes off. I'd take that alarm out of the cupboard and next time it goes off I would be paying attention to it.

FlyingBurrito · 25/04/2021 11:48

If it was carbon monoxide it would be affecting everyone in the house wouldn't it?

While you need to sort it out I wouldn't put it at the top of your list to explain your fatigue

Let the GP do the appropriate tests.

FudgeSundae · 25/04/2021 12:37

I had this once and the doc said it was a virus, even though I had no cold or cough or any other symptoms. It went away after a few days as suddenly as it arrived and nothing since. Hope that’s the case for you.

PlanterGents · 26/04/2021 16:05

Hi, just thought I would update that I’m in hospital with septic kidney infection! Not long after I posted, my urine went brown and I had a temperature of 41! And heart palpitations, cold and shivery... I am now much much better but in hospital for a while until m BP and pulse is stable? Doesn’t feel ‘unstable’ but it is apparently. Infection markers responding well to IV

Thanks again for not making me feel like I had woman flu Flowers

Good lord. Glad you got seen and glad you're in the right place. Hope you make a speedy recovery.

Earlybirdmissedtheworm · 26/04/2021 16:11

Oh wow, came on to say you should definitely get checked out and then saw the update.
Glad you're in the right place and getting treated, get well soon.

Flossie44 · 26/04/2021 16:17

Crikey, was about to say ‘make an appointment’ and saw your update. Hope you improve soon. 💐

rainbowstardrops · 26/04/2021 16:49

So glad you took the advice and you're getting sorted now!

GreenSlide · 26/04/2021 16:54

Goodness OP glad you're getting treated for that now. I was just about to comment that I've been treated for b12 and vitD deficiency in the past and am currently pregnant with diabetes and have never experienced what you had!
