When do they sleep in? Is it soon? Go on tell me it's soon

It's late. I should be in bed because my two darlings (5 and almost 7) will be up in probably 4.5 hours. Maybe 5 if I'm lucky. 5.5 if that blue moon is shining. It's also really nice and quiet though so I'd rather enjoy that than have a full nights sleep.

However I'd love to know from parents of older children-when do they sleep in? Do I need to wait until they're teenagers? I can't use myself as an example, apparently I've always slept as late as possible and was one of those mythical babies that had to be woken up to be fed. I'm a single parent, no idea what their dad was like as a child (and no way of finding out) but certainly he was a big fan of sleep as an adult.

I'm just curious really, at the moment I can't ever imagine them sleeping in. Doesn't matter how late they get to bed or how tired they are they will be up at stupid o clock. Gro clocks, dark room, light room, noise, silence, reading quietly in bed, nothing makes a difference. It is what it is and I've pretty much accepted that's how they're built currently. But I'd love to know if anyone else had similar early risers who then grew to love the lie in!

I would say 10. A few of my relatives were the same and it’s getting better ( slowly) after 10.
I really feel for you. I consider myself lucky in a way as we’re all the same - none of us likes getting up early. I can’t imagine myself waking up at 5 am and DD even at 6 am, unless she’s unwell however she’s waking up through the night which’s not great either.

indiakulfi · 25/04/2021 03:26

About 14-15

tortoiselover100 · 25/04/2021 03:31

It's not a case of when they sleep in but when you can sleep in without having to get up. Since my daughter was about 9, she gets up about 7.30 to 8am, gets her own breakfast the watches tv, plays on her switch etc for a while so I can lie in. I would say in a couple of years you'll be through this and then it won't be an issue anymore.

My son will sleep forever if I let him he's 7 and since about 5 has always slept late! My daughter has started sleeping in until about 8/9 sometimes half 9 since she was about 3! Weekends and holidays tho school days there woken at 7 and my son hates it 😂😂

MooseBeTimeForSummer · 25/04/2021 03:55

My son is 9. He’s usually awake at 6.

Crakeandoryx · 25/04/2021 03:58

In my experience it's between 12/13 that they become nocturnal.

DinosApple · 25/04/2021 06:54

My two sleep in until about 9 at weekend now. They are 10 and 11. They don't go to sleep until gone 9 either though.

I can't seem to sleep later than 6am these days though...

battleaxe2000 · 25/04/2021 06:58

In my experience when they go to secondary school

UpAt5amAgain · 25/04/2021 07:03

Mine are early risers but the 5 year old pops his head round the door to say hello then goes downstairs to put on the TV and get himself a bowl of cereal. It's only the 3 year old that disturbs me because she needs help getting out of her room, but actually if the 5 year old gets up at the same time they'll go down together and he puts on the TV and gets them both cereal. And feeds the cats!

Do they have to distrub you? At that age can they watch TV for half an hour until 6.30 or some bearable time?

PermanentTemporary · 25/04/2021 07:05

Im not entirely sure but I think for ds he was about 13. There are kids who can be taught to manage by themselves for a good bit in the morning a lot earlier than that.

GalesThisMorning · 25/04/2021 07:05

They start sleeping in at the same point that you lose the ability to sleep past 6 am, sorry OP Sad

EventuallyDistracted · 25/04/2021 07:07

17 and lockdown for one of mine. They'd been getting up and getting their own breakfast etc for many, many years before that though.

Hope so. My eldest is 12. [glares at DS who came bouncing in a little after 5 to discuss his latest avatar on roblox.... then asked me one minute ago 'how was your sleep?' ]
CatCup · 25/04/2021 07:08

Around 10/11.

MrBeagles · 25/04/2021 07:08

DS1 is nearly 11 and we won't see him till 8.30pm. He was a dreadful sleeper as a toddler. I was broken.

DS2 is 3 and up since 5am Hmm but I only have to look at the older one to remind myself I will sleep again at some point.

Your time is coming! Grin

EvilOnion · 25/04/2021 07:09

Absolutely agree @GalesThisMorning.

My 8yo has just started sleeping past 6.30am occasionally - she's still asleep as I lay here wide awake scared to move because I'm enjoying the peace!

My 15yo still gets up about 7.30am too 🙄

MrBeagles · 25/04/2021 07:11

At least 8.30am that should read. Blush

JollyAndBright · 25/04/2021 07:12

My DS is 14, he still wakes up at 5.30-6 every morning.
At least now he is quite so he doesn’t wake us up.

I agree with this.

Since last year dd (13) and Ds2 (11) have been sleeping later but when they do wake up they usually stay quietly in their rooms so I can lie in if I want to.

beginningoftheend · 25/04/2021 07:18

Different children get up at different times, but I would say not before age 10 IME.

However once they can read you don't have to get up with them.

Anycrispsleft · 25/04/2021 07:19

Once they figure out how to get Netflix on by themselves Wink which was about 7 and a half for my two. It's quarter past eight here and I haven't been disturbed yet!

LudoBear · 25/04/2021 07:23

I'm 33 and have never slept later than 6am. Sorry.

wendz86 · 25/04/2021 07:26

My 5 year old usually wakes me up around half 5 and dozes in my bed till half 6. She stayed at her dads last night and my 10 year old I currently still asleep . I slept till 7 and was like a lie in not being woken at half 5.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 25/04/2021 07:32

My DS is nearly 8 and wakes up between 6 and 7. He's old enough to entertain himself for an hour or so in the morning though so he doesn't wake me up and I'm an early riser myself so I'm normally up not long after.

LordFoofingtonismyMaster · 25/04/2021 07:35

13 here, never thought it would happen as I have never been a lie in type but dh is. She's gone from 5am to 11am and me checking her pulse in the blink of an eye. Younger ones is still up before 7. She could come down on her own but likes to hug me before she does and as I know this won't last too much longer I don't mind coming down and snoozing on the sofa to the backdrop of some insane YouTube kids....
