Has anyone lived in a bedsit back in the day?

Was thinking back to when i was in my early 20s back in the 80s, i lived in a bedsit. It was ok, i was lucky enough to have one that was meant for 2 people, so was not too small.
The toilet was communal, and you hd to leave your room and fo down stairs to a sort of cellar.
Shower was separate and not near toilet.
Bath was on another floor.
Back then we didn't have mobiles, so just a shared phone. On a table in the hall.
It took about half my wages.
Often wonder if anyone else lived in this way back then?.

Yes
Bedsit in one particular shared house
Shared showers where we had to put 20 peace coins in to make the hot water flow
Shared telephone in the corridor that had a box under it, where the coins collected. Someone smashed it & stole the coins

Also
Another shared house, own rooms with shared kitchen & bathroom
Paid cash to burley men who knocked on the door regularly
Until the bailiffs arrived & said the mortgage had not been paid. We said that we had paid cash regularly. We all had to move out that week

So glad I own my own property now

Early 80's and a student and lived in a few bedsit's, some better than others. It is freezing in front of the electric bars of the fire trying to keep warm in the Winter that I remember most. Yes to shared toilets and baths, shudder at the thought now.

I lived in a mezzanine level flat.
Victorian building, large lounge with tiny kitchen, separate bathroom, it even had a bath, then in the lounge was a ladder leading up to a double mattress, you could not stand up, it was more of a crawl into bed. I'm not even sure I can remember where I stored my clothes or how I dressed. But it was good times.

Yes in London, I paid £55 a week out of the £97 a week I earned. Another £11 a week on travelcard. So £31 a week for food, clothes, going out... I ate 5 days a week and on paydays I would celebrate by buying a McDonalds breakfast haha.

My studio was so teeny, I had a single bed right next to a unit that include a single cooking element and a tiny fridge which was banged up by a cupboard. My sash window afforded a view across a mansion which was home to a hugely famous rockstar. I'd see the band playing on the rooftop.

The pay phone by the front door was shared by about 40 of us, needless to say it was very difficult for callers to reach us
Bathroom in each floor shared by many.

A lovely young Irish magician was in the stuff next door and used to do tricks for us.

I swept the front steps to get £5 a week knocked off my rent.

Do bedsits like that still exist?
Seems like every room would want their own bathroom today but be happier to share the kitchen.

Bit later, but yes - lived in a bedsit for about a year in a bedsit that had a sink and its own phone, but shared toilet and kitchen & mailbox. Our floor had a shower, there was a bath in the floor above, alternate up -- I think it had 4 floors.

One wall was 80% glass and it roasted during that summer.

It's since been knocked down and replaced with expensive houses.

Yes, around 1998-2000. I had a tiny kitchenette in a cupboard. It was on the ground floor near some student residences with a door straight off the street and people would often try to get in at night - hated that! I had my own bathroom though so luxurious compared to some of these!

My first bedsit was in Caversham Heights £ 60 per calender month, I was earning £132 a month, it was very near where I worked. It was ground floor, a room with a single bed, a chair, 2 built in cupboards and a table. The kitchen and bathroom was shared with one other woman, she is lovely and married my brother!
