Tennis ball hit DD in the eye (not v fast, but still)

Just to be clear this was not a high-speed ball as in a proper tennis game, but even so DD was upset and in pain. She’s 10. Wondering if I need to get her checked, or expect a black eye, or anything else I can mention/prepare her for before bed.

The ball was thrown down from standing height (DS was trying to bounce it), and DD was lying on her back nearby. They were actually on a trampoline though so either she moved unexpectedly, or he aimed badly, and he threw it right into her eye with some force.

Many tears, pain all round the eye socket, and it hurts to move her face, but she can see fine. She’s had Calpol and is watching tv.

(Sorry this is not the right topic — just hoping for a bit of traffic)

hurts to move her face? as in can't grimace?

I would have her checked out. eye sockets can break. there are also a lot of nerves around the eye area.

I would like that to be checked IMO, I would ring 111 and see if you can get an OOH GP appt (we can usually get those round here as I live near a biggish A&E with a GP section attached.

My view on A&E is:

  • you go when something is clearly very serious
  • you also go when something could be serious and timely treatment could make a difference and there are no other options

So personally for a child's eye - which is complicated and irreplaceable - I would feel justified in seeking help at A&E if no other option. But I would try to find something other if it exists.

Yeah, I will call. She’s not upset any more but I’d hate to think we were playing down a fracture.

Thank you, I’d have called anyway I think but I’m never sure if I’m being ott

Hope it goes OK and she is all fine.

A tennis ball thrown down not very fast from standing height is very unlikely to cause a fracture.

I'd see how she is in the morning.
