I’ve gone from living with my parents to living with my dh

You?

I have on and off for years when I was younger.

I think it's a really good thing to do. You learn to be happy in your own company. My DDs live on their own spasmodically too.

It's not lonely at all. You have to like yourself though. It's not easy if things aren't right in your life

Happylittlebluebird · 24/04/2021 12:43

Yes. For five years as a single parent (kids with their dad 50/50). Very, very lonely. Got a dog which definitely helped.

YesItsAPeacock · 24/04/2021 12:44

I used to dream about moving out and living alone when I was in my teens. I would have loved to, but could never afford it. Always house shares or living with partners.

I would happily live alone though, should it come to it one day. I like my own company.

happinessischocolate · 24/04/2021 12:45

@FishyFriday

I've never lived alone. But I have been the only adult in the house (single parent).
Same, split with ex when dd was 2 and I was pregnant, so wasn't alone but was just me and the kids for the next 17 years
HUCKMUCK · 24/04/2021 12:46

Yep me. Met my DH when I was 20. Moved from my parents to DHs flat 6 months later.

I am 50 now and still happily married to DH but I sometimes fantasise about having my own flat or house!

tinytemper66 · 24/04/2021 12:47

I have never lived alone either. Parents, nurses residence, home again then married and lived with husband ever since. I am nearly 55. Sometimes I wish I did but am mostly glad for the company and I do love him!

RaininSummer · 24/04/2021 12:47

Never lived alone if we include living with children. When young it was shared houses, then the nuclear family, then single parenthood, now partner and dog with the occasional lodger . Much as I like my own company, I would probably get a lodger if I was the only human in the house as pretty sure I would become a hermit if left to my own devices.

LadyDanburysCane · 24/04/2021 14:24

Never lived alone. Went from parents home to the house I bought with DH.

DH has never even had his own bedroom as he always shared with brothers and now shares with me! At least I always had my own bedroom until I shared with him.

RRoonilWazlib · 24/04/2021 14:27

I've never lived alone either. I moved in with my bf (now husband) at 18 and am 30 now.

LudoBear · 24/04/2021 14:43

I have lived alone for the last 6 years and its highly likely I'll continue to do so until I die. I'm 33. It's lovely having nobody to answer to but it's bloody lonely.

kickergoes · 24/04/2021 14:47

DH has never even had his own bedroom as he always shared with brothers and now shares with me!

That's the same as my DH, when we moved I let him have the 4th bedroom so he could set it up how he's always dreamed! (He doesn't sleep in there, I'm trying to avoid saying "man cave" Blush)

SocraticJunkieWannabe · 24/04/2021 14:48

No. Parents, uni, variety of shared flats/houses, then moved in with DP.

Woodpecker22 · 24/04/2021 14:49

My parents bought me a 1 bed flat when I was at uni. Very generous but at 19 I felt so isolated. I was at uni 300 miles from my parents and the flat was the other side of the city from the university so I never saw anyone. After 4 months I ended up renting it out and moving so I was no longer alone.

Now I am in my 40s though the idea of a little peaceful hideaway sounds quite appealing to me.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 24/04/2021 14:49

I've never lived with anyone else so I'm the opposite! (except in uni halls)
Lived alone for 18 years now

Yeah, apart from My Cat and all the other Not My Cats.

Rockbird · 24/04/2021 14:49

Nope, stayed at home for uni so went straight from parents to DH and still there. My biggest regret is that I've never had a chance just to be me by myself. I would have loved it.

SuperintendentHastings · 24/04/2021 14:53

I lived alone for 7 years between the end of my first marriage and moving in with my now DH. I bloody loved it.

Sometimes I really miss the peace and tidiness and not having to consider anyone else! I had a lovely flat in Glasgow with a fantastic view over a park and out towards the Campsies.

amusedbush · 24/04/2021 15:07

I went from my parents' home to a shared flat, to another shared flat, to living with DH.

When I lived with my first flatmate she visited her sister in New Zealand for six weeks and it was amazing Grin I could happily live alone.

YoniAndGuy · 24/04/2021 15:13

No, never lived alone. I would think that was normal! - between uni and ending up with DH, I was in a series of shared houses. I could never have afforded to live alone as a single person!

optimistic40 · 24/04/2021 15:14

I didn't really (once in a house share with people I didn't know) until I was 33 and I love it. I'm 40 now and I live with my kids but I'm the sole decision maker and they're young, so no adult apart from me. My boyfriend and I have been talking about moving in together in a year or so and that appeals because he works away and would be away for 7 days and then home for two.

itwa · 24/04/2021 15:16

I had a couple of stints alone, from 22-24 in my first job, when friends of the family wanted me to house sit in London for their one bedroom flat. It was great. Then I got sent abroad with my company and lived alone, abroad for two years. Loved it both times.

Maggiesfarm · 24/04/2021 15:17

I think being in a flat or house share, unless with close friends, is akin to living alone. You are at least living independently then. Not that I've ever flat shared apart from a very short while, in between places, it's not something I would fancy.

Living alone can be great as long as you're not too nervous.

No, it's quite different.
paralysedbyinertia · 24/04/2021 15:20

I lived alone for around 3 years in my twenties. Ideally, I think everyone should do this for a while. I feel sorry for people without this experience.

MistyMargaret · 24/04/2021 15:37

I've never lived with anyone after leaving my parents' home at 17 to go to university! Only child, very introverted, prefer my relationships compartmentalised and conducted away from my home. I am aware that this is unusual and also that I am lucky to have been financially able to live in the way I prefer.

museumum · 24/04/2021 15:40

I lived alone from 28 to 31ish. I had flatmates up to then but moved city at 28 and just felt too old for sharing with random strangers. I was lucky to be able to afford a 1-bed by that point in my career too.
Moved in with the bf who later became dh at about 31yo.
