When would you tell work your're (hopefully) leaving if you were me?

I am currently in the middle of training for a new position with my current employer but I hate the new position. I find it quite boring but also stressful, and I HATE the shifts, the different ones all over the place are killing me and I am constantly shattered, my health is suffering. The old position was the same shifts/hours, but not as much money so i don't want to go back to that either.

I've been offered another job with a company I applied for some time ago, better hours, working from home (which I am sure I'd LOVE!) And in my field.

But the new company need to DBS check me, I am sure this will be fine, but this can take time I think. I've been told they'll send me a DBS request pack of some sort as soon as possible, they've been instructed to do such today.

They've said they're aiming for a start date of 31st of March, which isn't long is it?

Would you tell work you're going to take the position if it is offered, and then at least they can stop training you for your new position, and put you back to your old one until your DBS comes through?

Would you just hand your notice in? I am tempted as I am just so exhausted and it may be that i get no grace period in between.

OR conversely would you not tell them until HR have sent you the DBS request pack at least? Or until it's come back?

I am confused (perpetual tiredness not helping)!

Do you mean 31st May?
I just had my dbs back after a week but it was a top up one online for same organisation.
Do you have written confirmation from new place? If you do I’d be tempted to take few weeks off to recuperate if you can afford to.

CherieBabySpliffUp · 23/04/2021 18:47

What does it say in your contract about how much notice would you need to give?
That as a minimum.

OooooMyPaPa · 23/04/2021 18:48

I would give my notice in as soon as all my checks came back and I had a firm offer. Any company worth their salt would totally understand and wait for you to give the appropriate amount of notice.

Battleaxeoutofhell · 23/04/2021 18:49

One Month's notice.
Yes, sorry I did of course mean May (odd shifts, had no sleep)!

I have an email saying 'shall we aim for a start date of 31st of May' to which I replied yes.

If I wait for the checks to come back I guess the start date may be missed and I may have to wait longer. It's likely the right thing to do, but I just want to stop this as soon as possible so am tempted to take risks.. Perhaps not a great idea!

I’d wait until you’ve had it back and signed a contract for the new position.

This is your chance to say, "Yes let's aim for that date, but please be aware that I'm on one months notice so any checks would need to be completed one month in advance for me to start on xxx date".
Battleaxeoutofhell · 23/04/2021 18:55

I have already told them my notice period in a previous email (and the woman dealing with me is on AL next week but does say I can gain support via HR) but I guess maybe yes, I should reiterate this. I was being lazy I guess and hoping for a couple of weeks off to rest. Not the end of the world if It's a back-to-back swap though.

You need to make it clear that you have to give a month's notice and if they want you to start on 31st May, they need to have checks done and contract signed done in time.

(isn't 31st May a bank holiday?)

Don't hand in your notice until you have formal confirmation of your start date in writing. That way lies anxiety. Bitter experience.

Battleaxeoutofhell · 23/04/2021 21:09

Thanks cheesy- sorry if that happened to you
