A few days ago, I phoned up to cancel a subscription to a magazine, which I never have time to read any more. The only way to cancel the sub is by phone.

They were so nice they wore me down and I ended up not cancelling. After I got off the phone I felt like such an idiot that I almost didn't tell DP. When I did tell him, he cried with laughter, saying it's so me.

Reminded me of another time when a horrible colleague had a leaving do and no one else was going and I felt bad so I ended up going, having to listen to her all evening. ☹️

Tell me I'm not the only one. I'd like to hear your tales. Maybe I will stop being so embarrassed even just thinking about it.

Next time, ask your DP to cancel. The colleague thing just shows that you are a lovely person. At least you did something nice for someone.

I am/was a bit like you, but got slightly better with age. Grin

You just sound too nice for your own good! Get DH to ring up next time instead. I'm rubbish at saying no too and have ended up on all sorts of committees and even jobs that I didn't really want. I wish I wasn't such a people pleaser!

These people can be really persuasive though, it's their job and they are trained to do it well.

Next time 'I appreciate that offer/deal/situation, however no thank you, I still want to cancel'

It might help you in future to have a handwritten note in front of you with helpful phrases.

Just say no.

I really don’t want and have to go now.

Thank you but my decision is final.

Having a written aid is a useful tool for the indecisive and the meek and mild who will given in to hard marketing practices.

We made a card up for an elderly relative giving her useful phrases to repeat.
