Natural Hay Fever Remedies

Can anyone suggest anything for hayfever other than normal antihistamines? I have no problem taking them but they don't do anything! I currently have puffy eyes, bunged up nose, itchy ears and throat and a cough (which of course isn't great at the moment but it happens every year!) and I'm fed up already!

It doesn't even have to be natural to be honest, just something that works.

Maybe you need a different antihistamine and maybe nasal spray and eye drops

Locally produced honey might help (eat it, not on your eyes). I haven’t tried it but apparently it works.

Thank you. I'd forgotten about the nasal spray so I've dug out my Beconase. I've tried all the OTC antihistamines and the prescription ones I had last year made me feel awful. I need to do some research on eye drops as I wear contact lenses and I don't know if there's any I can use. I need something under my eyes as they are so puffy!

I take a three pronged approach but the key is consistency.

Beconase or Flixonase spray daily.

Eye drops. They HAVE to contain sodium chromoglycate or for me they are useless.

Tablets. For me only cetirizine works. One a day although in peak season I take one when I get up and a half at about 8pm.

The main relief really is from the tablet. If I take daily it stays under control. Miss a day or two and life becomes very uncomfortable.

Which prescription was it?

Presumably you already keep bedroom windows shut, and dry linen indoors?

BaggoMcoys · 23/04/2021 12:49

Annoyingly I can't remember the name but there's a nasal spray for hayfever I used a few years ago when I was pregnant that worked really well. It was the only thing the pharmacist said I was allowed to use in pregnancy so I know you aren't pregnant but you might be able to find it if you ask a pharmacist for hayfever medication that's suitable for pregnant women. I was surprised it worked more effectively for me than antihistamines ever had.

Putting vaseline inside your nostrils at the start of the day is meant to help. The pollen sticks to the vaseline. Also keeping windows closed at night is supposed to help, and you can get air purifiers for the bedroom that help to clear the pollen from the air.

I've got Beconase but I'll have a look at Flixonase. Ceteririzine is the best one for me as well and I'm doubling up morning and evening.

Which prescription was it?

It was fexofenadine. It didn't make much of a difference and I felt as though I had brain fog all the time.

I sleep with the windows shut but we do sometimes dry linen outside as we don't have much room indoors for drying.

Don't hang bed linen, towels and your clothes on washing line - dry inside
Keep curtains closed all day (this way you can keep the window open if it's warm)
Shower when you come home
Tie hair back
Turn your pillow over when you get in bed
Start taking tablets 6 weeks before hayfever season
Dr told me it is OK to take up to 4 a day in peak season

Drying linen inside is the thing that makes the biggest difference for me.

@ForensicFlossy that’s interesting you were told you could take 4 antihistamines in a day. I was told the same but when I’ve said that to people they’ve said I couldn’t have been told that! I feel better knowing I’m not going mad!
