Teen DD has just hacked off all her hair

DD (17yo and ADHD so poor impulse control) has hacked off all her hair. It looks horrendous. She'd said she wanted it short as she'd ruined it by straightening and bleaching (it was a bit strawlike). I was going to take her at the weekend! But last night she decided she couldn't wait and went for it with scissors. Not sure there's much left for a hairdresser to salvage. Been looking up pixie cuts, I hope something works here!!!

A rite of passage (though usually at age 7, not 17!). Grin It's only hair. She might even decide that she likes whatever the hairdresser manages to salvage!

BasiliskStare · 23/04/2021 01:23

Take her to a hairdresser. What is done is done but they can probably make it look better than a home chop. The good news is hair only grows one way so it will only get longer if she hates it. Flowers

Oyvavoy · 23/04/2021 01:25

She did it at 7 as well, right before picture day. I thought we'd outgrown the self hair cutting phase!

That was always the plan anyway. But she decided she couldn't wait!

What does she think now it's cut?

Ginandplatonic · 23/04/2021 01:37

Ahh teenagers and their hair! They are sent to try us. I have the opposite problem with my 15yo son, it’s down to his waist almost and he refuses to get it cut. “It’s only hair, it’s only hair, it’s only hair...” has become my mantra. I do sympathise OP.

Oyvavoy · 23/04/2021 01:40

@caramellia

She hates it and regrets her impulsivity (not for the first time...)

To be fair, she could totally rock a short hair cut. She's a beautiful girl and it could bring out her features. But not sure why she thought it'd be a good idea to do it herself?! She said she couldn't wait!! Luckily we live somewhere where there is no school this week so time to sort it out before Monday.

Oh dear. Hopefully hairdresser can make best of a poor job. Hard lesson for dd. I don't think you need to do anything - the lesson in itself will be enough for her.

caramellia · 23/04/2021 01:55

I have done stuff like this so many times. Always knowing it was bad but couldn't control myself doing it. I don't have ADHD but there was no explanation.
I suppose think how often you could feel fat and then have a chocolate bar, it's hard to stop so need to Channel it onto something else.

God, yes. Quite the opposite - I want to help her which I will do by taking her to a good hairdresser but I guess not much I can do to prevent some consequences.

@Oyvavoy I had my hair cut much shorter once and hated it once done. ( I was a teenager and burst into tears ) Granny said it was lovely & I looked like Elizabeth Taylor ( I most emphatically did not Grin ) But I think you are right , get a hairdresser to make it look like a plan rather than a random scissor attack , and especially over the summer it might grow quite quickly. Also if she had bits which were in poor condition because of bleaching etc it could be a blessing in disguise.

I think girls can absolutely look better with shorter hair. May not help your daughter now but that is my opinion. Flowers

Mummyoflittledragon · 23/04/2021 04:36

Bless her. She’s obviously struggling. I’d let your take the day off school / college and take her at the weekend... if you can get an appointment. I presume she can homeschool. If not, perhaps you could get hold of a decent pair of scissors and try to even it out yourself?

No way would I try to do anything to it! She has today off school anyhow and I've managed to book an appointment for this evening with one of the top hairdressers in town. If anyone can do anything to produce something halfway decent, he can. He's also super nice and sympathetic and had a bit of a misspent youth which he always chats about so will make her feel better about what she did.

Her hair was in pretty bad shape as she'd done keratin straigthening treatment and then bleached it which was why she wanted to go short.

I've been texting her photos of celebs with pixie hairstyles (although she's still asleep as she was up to 4.30am!) so hopefully she will see something she likes

Ah well. That’s good. I take it you’re not in the U.K. then as you’d never get an appointment just like that and it’s just about 5 am here... You’d be looking at mid May probably at the earliest.

Oyvavoy · 23/04/2021 05:13

No, 11am here and thankfully hairdressers have not been shut for a while now! Luckily for DD!!

I remember locking myself in the bathroom to chop off my hair. Mum had a sixth sense that something was up and demanded I opened the door while I was halfway done. Cue trip to the barbers to finish the job. I have nice longish hair now.

BasiliskStare · 23/04/2021 07:37

@Oyvavoy have you shown her Audrey Hepburn - well if ever a woman looked beautiful with short hair - she is up amongst them

I see so many young women with long hair and on the TV (where it is so obvious they have hair extensions ) and I just don't think it looks that great ( but their choice)

Do let us know if DD looks fabulous after hairdresser

I can imagine if all her friends have long hair she might feel a bit crap but honestly if she has had all the damaged bits cut off - she can start to grow healthy hair . & as I said - hair only grows longer.

That won't probably resonate with a teenager

So main point is Flowers to @Oyvavoy & her DD

GoryGilmore · 23/04/2021 07:47

Lots of girls and women look amazing with shorter hair, all this talk of it is making me tempted to get the scissors out myself Grin
I did similar stuff when I was younger though, usually to try and correct poor home dye jobs. It seems devastating at the time when it goes wrong but it always grows back. Hopefully the hairdresser will do a good fix.

Talking of women on tv who have hair extensions but look a million times better with short hair, this week I saw a picture of Katie Price with short hair and she looks SO much better with it short. Hope she keeps it like that.

Oyvavoy · 23/04/2021 07:55

Thank heavens for Emma Watson!
She's decided she wants a pixie cut like hers. I'm a bit worried it might not work on her as she has naturally curly hair but she's perked up seeing how good Emma Watson looks so we'll see what the hairdresser advises

Halle Berry really rocks a wavy pixie cut. I’m sure it will look great op. Bless her (been known to do this sort of thing too from time to time, and I’m nearly 50 Blush )

Oyvavoy · 23/04/2021 08:08

I think that would suit her hair type more but she's quite taken by the Emma Watson cuts. She's quite used to spending hours styling her hair (straightening when not keratin treated!) so I think she'll put in the time to get it right.

This might be a bit retro for DD ( from 2015 ha ha ) but I think the cut on this photograph is fabulous ) h2d.co.uk/Blog/short-curly-hairstyles
