I'm thinking about getting a Baked In subscription as a birthday gift and wondered what people who have it think of it?

Thanks in advance
Sosig

I’ve had the packs off Amazon rather than a sub and they were a lot of effort, required a lot of butter or just not worth the faff imho. It’s a shame because it’s a great idea.

I don't know who it would appeal to.

People who bake always have flour, sugar, baking powder, cocoa etc in, so wouldn't pay a tenner! to have a quid or two's worth of ingredients posted to them.

People who don't bake might not have a baking tin etc so wouldn't stick with it once they see how expensive it works out, or decide they don't like baking.

@BarbaraofSeville I love cooking but I'm not a very good baker so the idea of just having the exact ingredients sent out seemed like a lovely idea rather than buy lots of ingredients I may not use and as a way to try new recipes that I may overlook.

@Brogues I didn't know that was an option, thank you.

I bought a three month sub for my 12 yr old DGD as a present. She has enjoyed making them and got good results. I've just renewed for another 3 months. Pre lock-down we baked together, so this is a poor substitute but still They are expensive for what they are but nice as a treat

Tesco sell some of the range too just tends to be more expensive than the Amazon prices. Everyone on the Christmas bargains thread was trying to get cinnamon rolls kit cheap.

My parents bought one for my dd, and she loved it! It was fun for her to bake something different each month, and she tried recipes that she definitely wouldn't have tried otherwise. The recipes were very easy to follow (she did them without help), and the results were always pretty good!

It is quite expensive for what it is, and you have to buy any extra fresh ingredients required for the recipe, so it certainly isn't the most cost effective approach, but it's still a nice gift, especially for a young teenager. I don't recall needing to buy any tins/equipment.

DD used to get quite excited when the box arrived each month - there was a lot of fun in the surprise element of "what will I be making this time?" which you obviously wouldn't get if you were just choosing recipes and baking from scratch. It definitely pushed dd to be more adventurous with her bakes, and she really enjoyed that aspect of it.

I wouldn't recommend it for a really experienced baker because they probably wouldn't see the point, but I think a subscription would probably quite good fun for a novice who wants to get into baking a bit more. FWIW, it did build dd's confidence in the kitchen and she carried on trying different recipes afterwards.

I had a bad experience with them too, my first box arrived with damaged ingredients and when I complained they asked for the batch number (they were damaged in the post!), and suggested I buy replacements and 'give it a try anyway'.
I am disabled and was shielding, the reason I had subscribed was so that I could be guaranteed to get things without substitutions in online shopping and only have to order milk, eggs, things I could be reasonably sure a supermarket would deliver. I basically paid £10 a month for a glossy recipe book and they were no help at all, so I wouldn't recommend them.

My mum bought a subscription for dd2's 14 th birthday last year and she loves it.

JeanLouiseFinch · 22/04/2021 16:05

DD had a subscription for a year when she was 10/11. She loved it as she could mostly do it herself.

Whatapalavaa · 22/04/2021 17:20

Love mine and I'm late 20s!

Sosigsandwich · 22/04/2021 21:48

Thank you all, I think I'll go for it!
