In the space race, particularly for the USSR, everyone who went into space described it as such a profound experience to see the world as the only oasis in the Universe for known life, that no borders could be seen from space and that humanity is one tribe - several cosmonauts became dissidents after being in space.

When Harper & Brothers asked Zelda Fitzgerald to contribute to Favorite Recipes of Famous Women she wrote, "See if there is any bacon, and if there is, ask the cook which pan to fry it in. Then ask if there are any eggs, and if so try and persuade the cook to poach two of them. It is better not to attempt toast, as it burns very easily. Also, in the case of bacon, do not turn the fire too high, or you will have to get out of the house for a week. Serve preferably on china plates, though gold or wood will do if handy."

An uplifting thought everytime i contemplate my kitchen.

The kiwi lays an egg which is bigger than a chicken egg and is six times as big as you'd expect, taking up 20% of the mothers body.

Wholesome and the space race. Anyone want to know what happened to the dogs and chimps?

The dogs generally did not meet a good end at first since the technology wasn't mature - Laika died of heat exhaustion.
However, Ham the chimpanzee almost drowned but was rescued in time. The deficiencies in the capsule flagged up safety issues since this preceded John Glenn's orbital hop but it is argued that the delay in fixing these was how Yuri Gagarin got into space first.

I like Zelda Fitzgerald's recipe - particularly after all that bloody cooking and no eating out...

Penguins are monogamous. If one is widowed, they observe a mourning period of at least a year and then search for their next partner, but are still observed to mourn their late partner. Penguins also perform mass mourning where they gather together and bow their heads at the same time.

Other than Wales the country in the world that speaks Welsh the most is Patagonia.
Patagonia isn't a country, it's split between Argentina and Chile.

A German WW2 Luftwaffe pilot risked court martial when he decided not to attack a stricken B17 bomber when seeing the damage that it had incurred and could see the crew men giving first aid to each other. The B17 bomber piloted by Charlie Brown was missing and engine and a nosecone with significant damage to the fuselage.

Risking court martial, the Luftwaffe pilot Franz Stigler escorted the B17 bomber out of German airspace and back to Allied airspace, whereupon he peeled off back to Germany. The B17 bomber limped back to England with barely 250 ft of altitude when it made its approach.

Due to the nature of the post war period neither men could talk about it as it would risk the possibility of prosecution but they were able to reunite;

Did they pinch an egg from another couple, or just adopt a chick?
SamusIsAGirl · 25/04/2021 21:13

Sometimes they will steal eggs - not sure about chicks. But they have been seen to use a stone as a surrogate egg in the wild.

Bob Ross once got a letter from a viewer who wanted to paint like him but couldn't because they were colourblind.

The next week, Bob did a painting entirely in greyscale, showing that you don't need to see in colour to paint.

Rabbits purr 🐰 🐇 🐰

SamusIsAGirl · 26/04/2021 20:17

Didn't know that about rabbits - they don't tend to make much in the way of sounds.

Rockhopper81 · 26/04/2021 20:46

To be fair, the only sound I've heard come out of my nephew's rabbit is a grunt. But then he's a bit of a cantankerous shit, so he grunts at everything. Cute though, and loves to be stroked (once you've actually got him out).

Guinea pigs make a plethora of noises, including what sounds like teeth chattering. The best were the ones in a school I worked in, who began squeaking as soon as the fridge door was open, as they expected feeding!

DisplayPurposesOnly · 26/04/2021 22:16

Rabbit purrs are more of a vibration, than a noise although you can hear it sometimes.

@Rockhopper81, has your nephew's rabbit been neutered? That would calm him down. (And then he could have a female friend; rabbits are social and need company.)
