TV mounted to wall - Living Room

I am thinking of mounting the tv to a wall using a full motion bracket. I then plan to remove the tv unit to free up more space in the living room. For those that already have such a set up do you regret doing away with the tv unit? We tend to only watch Netflix and freeview. At the moment we watch tv through the sky box but we don’t pay for a subscription with sky.

We have had a tv up on the wall for the last 14 years above our fire place (not a real fire but gas flame effect) our virgin box, router box and playstation sit next to the fire place on a kallax unit. The wires for the tv are fed up inside the fire surround so are not visible. We have a small narrow lounge and it enables us to have 2 sofas in the lounge by having a tv on the wall

Thanks @Mumof1andacat. I have seen lots of people mount the tv above the fireplace and I don’t think you can go wrong with this setup. I’m thinking of mounting it on recess wall. If you see the attached pic, I’m thinking of leaving it where it is but attaching it higher up on the wall. I’m worried it will look odd as it’s on one side, rather than in the middle of the wall.

I did this, it’s on the side wall inside the inglenook, so when it’s pushed back flat you can hardly see it, the sound bar ans sky dish are on thin floating glass shelves below it, it works really well.

PinkCookie11 · 21/04/2021 07:56

No regrets, best thing we done to the lounge!

Oly4 · 21/04/2021 08:12

No regrets here either, loads more space

Walkerbean16 · 21/04/2021 08:14

all our TV are wall mounted.

HappydaysArehere · 21/04/2021 08:47

Is the sound louder through the wall? We are semi detached. Also really intrigued about having a sky box without a subscription although I realise you don’t use their services. One other thing I wondered about do you find yourself looking upwards at the screen bothers you?

PinkCookie11 · 21/04/2021 08:56

Looking up somewhat at the tele doesn’t bother me. For how far you sit away from it it’s in eye level with a straight head if that makes sense 🤣

Divineswirls · 21/04/2021 09:01

I've been thinking about doing this too, to free up some extra sofa space.
We have a normal real fireplace, which we never use but I like the idea of putting it on the wall of the side alcove which is where it is at the moment in a tv unit.
I do worry that it'll fall down as it's a very heavy TV 42 ".

MiloAndEddie · 21/04/2021 09:34

We’ve got ours on the wall. No regrets, absolutely fine.
Ours is 65 inch but my DH is a carpenter so knows all the correct fixings to use to make sure the bloody thing doesn’t fall down.

My top tip would be, don’t skimp on the bracket you choose and if you’re not 100% confident in fitting it, get someone in who is

HowToBringABlushToTheSnow · 21/04/2021 10:07

We had ours on the wall for years (not above the fireplace) but decided we wanted our lovely old inglenook fireplace to be the focus of the room, so we moved the TV to a stand to the right of the fireplace.

Looks more stylish and is more comfortable to watch (I hated having to look 'up' to watch TV).

Wall-mounted TVs look v good in modern homes though, even above a modern style fireplace. A TV above a beautiful old fireplace is a travesty though!!

katienana · 21/04/2021 10:11

We got the electrician to do ours when we were getting sockets and stuff moved. So we have 4 sockets on the wall behind the TV and no trailing wires. We use Now tv and it's a smart TV so no need for a box.
It looks great, it's a massive TV but doesn't dominate the room. The TV was too big to a actually sit inside an alcove!

It does look huuuuge on that photo!!

Divineswirls · 21/04/2021 10:14

It looks so weird just floating there like that. I'd have to put something underneath it like a narrow table or something to balance it out

minipie · 21/04/2021 10:34

Ours is wall mounted to the side of the fireplace but with built in shelves all round, so it stands out less and also has a place for the boxes (freeview box and sonos speaker). I’m not keen on having it above fireplace personally, too high.

Whereisthewarmth · 21/04/2021 10:53

where is the attached pic?

I would never put one over a fireplace.

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 21/04/2021 10:59

It's fine if you don't have any other devices that need to connect to the TV sound bar, games console, Blu-Ray player (if anyone even still has those besides me!), Apple TV pod etc. Otherwise you still need something to put all those things on and sometimes wires trailing up visibly to the TV.

Worriesome · 21/04/2021 11:00

@addictedtomafs go for it, it makes the room look a lot tidier and prevents young kids from touching the tv (my little one likes to try and touch all the people on tv)

Thanks all, I’m going to bite the bullet and mount it to the wall. It does give a neater finish, we recently mounted the tv in the bedroom to a wall and we love it!

We mounted ours on the wall just above the tv table. It was really too big for the table, only just fitting on, so you had to sit directly in front of it to see it. Wall mounting it means it can be pulled out for us all to watch together if we want to.
