A birthday present for dh

Dilbertian · 20/04/2021 17:28

Dh is 53 in a couple of weeks. He is incredibly difficult to buy gifts for, because he wants very little - and what he wants, he buys. So there's not really much point in buying anything for his few interests, as he either doesn't want them or already has them.

He's a software engineer who's not really into software or engineering as a hobby.

Any way-out ideas?

Does he drink alcohol? Nice bottle of spirits?

Chocolates, cheese?

He sounds a lot like me and I'm honestly not bothered about expensive presents and would rather receive just a couple of small token gifts.

He likes a good single malt, but I bought him a bottle of his current favourite for Christmas.

Something silly and fun might be good. I seriously considered buying him a unicycle, until I realised that the £60ish ones I was looking at were child-size. £200+ is too much for something that is really a gamble!

Some kind of food subscription. My DH had enjoyed Graze snacks, Degustabox and The Snaffling Pig Co.
Hotel Chocolat velvetiser
Power bank
Solar phone charger
HP sprocket printer
Swell or Chilly’s water bottle or food flask
Soda Stream
Bbq

He likes it v much as can read magazines that he wouldn't buy regularly due to cost. Can also use on up to 5 devices so DD uses too for her interests. I'm v impressed for the price

You can choose the picture on the front of the map, or may be able to upload a photo.

If he likes maps, lots of great ones here.

Lovelydiscusfish · 20/04/2021 19:32

Some kind of experience - a lovely meal or a night away somewhere special when this is possible again? Or tickets to something he likes?

willowsmumsy · 20/04/2021 19:55

A socks subscription? Funny yet useful 🤣

Ninkanink · 20/04/2021 20:06

My DH is the same and he really loved building the Lego models I got him - Sydney Opera House and an aeroplane.

Or if he likes cooking a weekly or monthly curry box and beer subscription.

LucysSkyDiamonds · 20/04/2021 20:10

Dh asked for a weighted blanked. I was really surprised, never would have thought of it for him but he's delighted with it.

Impatientwino · 20/04/2021 22:12

I did a 'hamper' from the local butcher for my DH for a birthday. It had their homemade sausages, rib eye steak, smoked bacon, their homemade pie, fillet steak, some ribs and then I added beef tomatoes and some big flat mushrooms. They also sell fresh curry sauce so put one of those in there. Got a couple of sachets of fresh peppercorn sauce from the supermarket too and put those in too.

B&m/home bargains or asda that I've seen recently do hamper bases you can make up for a few quid.

I think you have my husband!
Lonely planet epic walks of the world was a hit, as was a fell running/ hiking jacket, a coffee subscription, a magazine subscription, Darlington bar excellence single malt whisky glasses, a magic flint, dry max outdoor socks and an Ember mug.

I want your present buying skills - it's something I'm really really crap at!!

-Word art. You can put in various words that mean something special to him- name, DOB, hobbies etc, choose a shape for the design and it puts the words into the shape. Buy a frame. More of a gift for a woman IMO, but something to look into

  • BBQ tool set
  • BBQ smoker for fish, cheese etc
  • Gardening tools, gloves, loppers
  • A funny, bowel centred book to read on the toilet?
