Heat pump tumble dryer

My old condenser dryer has just packed in and I’ve started looking at replacements. I’ve seen quite a good deal on a heat exchange one and I wondered if anyone has one and what they think of it? From reviews they seem to take a lot longer to dry, there’s only two of us here so it doesn’t get used loads so this might not be a problem.
I’d be really grateful for people’s views, thanks!

This thread is quite old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’re looking for tumble dryers, we’ve recently updated our best tumble dryer page with lots of great options rated by Mumsnet users. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

I've just bought a heat pump dryer having previously had a vented one.

I much prefer it to my old vented one, which I found would sometimes fade the colours slightly on some items of clothing.

Yes it does take longer, a load now that would have taken maybe an hour will take closer to 2. But the money saved on the energy efficiency means I'm not bothered in the slightest, if I use it twice a week for a year it costs around £30 to run.

TTCat39 · 20/04/2021 13:20

@iamme21 Are you sure it's given up for good? Ours was running cold, no heat at all, so we pulled it out (quite the challenge as it is built-in to units) and there was a reset button on the back. It had overheated and that was the safety mechanism. Flicked the switch and it worked fine again.

FTEngineerM · 20/04/2021 13:23

Ours drys 9kg in an hour.. certainly not longer than any other kind of dryer.

Both wm and td are Samsung

FurryGiraffe · 20/04/2021 13:49

We've just acquired a heat pump dryer, as a replacement for an old condensing one that conked out. I'd say if anything it's quicker than the old one.

iamme21 · 20/04/2021 13:58

@TTCat39 No it’s definitely dead! But thanks for trying. It’s over 10 years old and owes me nothing now.
Sounds like a heat pump one is the way to go.

We have a series 6 Bosch one and it’s fantastic, much quicker than our old one.

beakyboo10 · 20/04/2021 14:47

We have the Beko 9kg heat pump tumble dryer which replaced our condenser one. I am so glad we have the heat pump one as its so quiet, it normally drys things a lot quicker than the timer says and we needed the 9kg as the toddler get through a lot of clothes. It also has a light inside which is helpful.

LadyofMisrule · 20/04/2021 15:25

I have a heat pump dryer. I haven't found a difference in drying time. I initially bought a Beko one, but it overheated badly and destroyed a whole set of school uniform for four children. I got a refund and bought a Bosch, which has worked like a dream.

NannyGythaOgg · 20/04/2021 16:38

I love mine. It is slower than my old vented one but no much and as I love alone it isn't an issue.

I find things come out more crease free as it senses when the clothes are just dry enough.

I also like that because it has a heat pump and the heat is reused it doesn't make the room uncomfortably hot as an ordinary condenser does.

ChiefBabySniffer · 20/04/2021 16:41

I have two dryers, a condenser and a heat pump. The heat pump is the WORST purchase I've ever made in my entire life. It's is placed next to the condenser. The condenser spews out heat and dries my clothes in an hour but even after 3-4 cycles the heat pump is still damp. Then they start to smell.

iamme21 · 20/04/2021 18:56

@ChiefBabySniffer oh no! Can I ask what make/model you’ve got?

I love our Samsung heat pump. Its quiet, has an interior light and is more economic than a vented. Clothes come out with minimal creasing and It doesn't overheat the kitchen.

ChiefBabySniffer · 20/04/2021 19:50

Mine is a candy. I can't express enough how much I hate it. Just £280 waste ever 😩

cleckheatonwanderer · 20/04/2021 20:37

Have a look at the Which? reviews if you can, sometimes you can get a free trial for a month. I don't think there are any heat pump best buys under the £400 mark but I could be wrong.

bert3400 · 20/04/2021 20:41

We've just brought a Samsung heat pump TD, really impressed. Clothes come out totally dry now, not creased, it's quiet and economically it's better than a normal condenser.

Sooverthemill · 20/04/2021 20:47

I got one following a refurb last September and I hate it! It takes forever even for a few things ( I can't always wait, disabled DD) and if I bung things in and don't take them out immediately they become damp and need drying again. I'm so disappointed as my old cheap vented tumble dryer was brilliant but the rearranging of the rooms meant no external wall to vent. DH moans that our house looks like student accommodation as we have stuff over chairs and banisters drying. I really do not recommend them until the technology improves. This was a which Best Buy

That - I love it, we line dry in the summer but in the winter it's great. Much quiter as people said and much more economic.
Pedallleur · 20/04/2021 22:05

Didn't like our heat pump Bosch. Took forever and was unreliable. Replaced with a cheap Bosch condenser. Takes a long time to recoup the costs in energy saving. Might be better models now

dangermouseisace · 20/04/2021 23:19

I had an A rated heat pump-expensive and didn’t last long. Just over 2 years. Some board went and that was it. Got a B rated condenser Bosch and it’s been going for 7 years now. I don’t think it’s any more expensive to run, because it’s quicker. It was so much cheaper too.

PickAChew · 20/04/2021 23:23

My last dryer was a heat pump. I have an incontinent child and it got a lot of use. Completely useless after just over the 3 year warranty period. The condenser was totally clogged and I could do nothing about it. .

Have replaced it with a standard condenser dryer that I can clean the heat exchanger of, under the shower. As fast as new almost a year in.

PickAChew · 20/04/2021 23:26

Our electric bills dropped dramatically after replacing the heat pump, BTW.

iamme21 · 21/04/2021 06:37

Thanks everyone, think I’ll go for a standard condenser!
