Can anyone help, I'm mathematically impaired?

I blame the sun and baby brain.

I've just had my csection date for DS2

DS1 is born October 2019

DS2 is coming 12th august 2021

DH says there will be just one school year between them, but I thought there would be 2.

I know there'll be 22 months between them, but I just can't seem to work out the school year difference

Can anyone help?

I apologise for my stupidity in advance, maths has never been my strong point!!

I think DH is right... as if DS1 was born in Oct 2020 then they would be in the same school year?

I don't have kids and it's a long time since I was in school!

Sirzy · 19/04/2021 13:30

DS1 will be one of the eldest in his year, Ds2 will be the year below but one of the youngest in the year.

Sirzy · 19/04/2021 13:31

That is assuming your in England!

One school year

FlyingBurrito · 19/04/2021 13:34

Won't they be in consecutive years, i.e no year between them

Child one will be 4 in Oct 23 so starts school in Sep 24, child 2 will be 4 in Aug 25 so starts school in Sep 25 assuming normal English school system

emmathedilemma · 19/04/2021 13:35

School year in England runs from 1st Sept to 31st August.
So DS1 is in the year 01/09/19 - 31/08/20
and DS2 will be in the following year 01/09/20 - 31/08/21

If you're in Scotland then I think they would be 2 years apart because the school intake year splits in Jan or Feb and August birthday children go a year later than they would in England.

Love51 · 19/04/2021 13:36

Adjacent school years. I know this for a fact.
It is a lovely age gap OP, congratulations.

Love51 · 19/04/2021 13:37

Oh sorry I assumed England or Wales.

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 19/04/2021 13:40

They will be in consecutive school years: DS1 in the school year for children born from September 2019 to August 2020, and DS2 in the school year for kids born from September 2020 to August 2021

Thatwentbadly · 19/04/2021 13:40

In England you can defer for DS2 and so they enter reception a year later so they are the oldest in the year rather than the youngest.

daryldixonsdreamgirl · 19/04/2021 13:41

One school year

FlyingBurrito · 19/04/2021 13:50

@daryldixonsdreamgirl

One school year
I'm getting confused and doubting myself now, can you explain with the actual start dates how there would be a year between them.
crispychicken12 · 19/04/2021 13:55

Think of it as saving yourself a year of nursery / pre-school child care fees for the youngest ;)

AnnaSW1 · 19/04/2021 14:04

One school year

ScrollingLeaves · 19/04/2021 14:07

School year 1
DC1 Oct 2019...............,,,,,,,,August 31 2020
Start school Sept 2024

School year 2
DC 2 Aug (12th) 2021.......August 31 2021 ( treated as born year before)7
Start school Sept 2025

purplebagladylovesgin · 19/04/2021 14:08

If you are in England then yes. One school year.

The school year for your first born includes those born 1.9.19-31.8.20

The next school year is 1.9.20- 31.8.21
And your second born falls into this year group.

So they will be just a year apart at school.

FlyingBurrito · 19/04/2021 14:12

Ah, I see that when you say a year between them you actually mean no year between them. No wonder I'm getting confused Confused

When my children started school that was called the next school year, one year between meant that when the 2nd child started rececption the first child would have been going into year 2.

I have to say that seems an odd way of describing it now, doesn't everyone get in a muddle?

Cissyandflora · 19/04/2021 14:15

One school year. It starts in September.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 19/04/2021 14:19

They'll be in consecutive years. There won't be a gap between them.

CarlottaValdez · 19/04/2021 14:29

@FlyingBurrito

I think everyone just realised (from the dates) the OP must be asking will they be in consecutive school years or not and used her terms. That’s what I did anyway!

crispychicken12 · 19/04/2021 15:55

Thanks everyone, saved myself a year of nursery fees thanks to ds2 being an august baby Grin
