Move to Bridgewater - any opinions?

Afternoon

DH & I are considering a move to Bridgewater area - combination of both our jobs moving to WFH permanently and wanting to move away from the SE.

Does anyone have any opinions on the area? Good or bad, we’ve literally just stuck a pin in a map and have never even visited!

Thanks Smile

As in the town in Somerset...l wouldn't. I live about an hour away. It's not the nicest if towns to be honest.
Somerset has some much nicer towns but it depends what you need from the move..schools work etc.

Bearnecessity · 18/04/2021 15:46

Bridgwater the 'Home of Carnival' 😂😂😂 as it says on their town signs. Is an ok place slightly on the rough side and gridlocked with traffic constantly because of Hinckley power station.

It has nice towns and villages around it is 20 mins from Street and Glastonbury 30 mins from Wells which is naicer...but quite dull imo. Bruton is all arty and trendy as is Frome.

Somerset is beautiful and a lovely area to be tho...shocked I have been here 20 years now.

AdoptedBumpkin · 18/04/2021 15:48

I don't know Bridgwater but Taunton is pretty nice from what I've seen and heard. Just my opinion, but I find Somerset has a laid back vibe.

babypinkelephant · 18/04/2021 15:56

Not Bridgewater, try Glastonbury, Brent Knoll,Mark, Wedmore, Weston super Mare
Bridgy can smell at times and lots of jokes about natives having six fingers and toes

I live in North Somerset

Atalune · 18/04/2021 16:01

I live reasonably close.
It’s a big fat no from me. It’s rough. The TA7 postcode is a no no from me.

Nicer
Langport
Taunton
Frome
Wincanton

Lots of title villages abound around some of the larger towns but I would swerve Bridgwater and Yeovil.

Beakind82 · 18/04/2021 16:02

It's got the reputation to be a bit of a dive.

Beakind82 · 18/04/2021 16:03

Ps it use to smell pretty bad, not sure if it still does!

Atalune · 18/04/2021 16:04

@CrochetNut feel free to PM me if you want to ask anything.

WaterBottle123 · 18/04/2021 16:11

Grew up there, 100 percent no from me. Taunton also a dive. Pick one of the villages, so many pretty ones

stillcrazyafterall · 18/04/2021 16:16

I wouldn't. Better towns are Burnham on Sea or Weston super Mare. If you are looking at Bridgwater I assume you couldn't afford places like Wedmore which is posh. Weston super Mare is good, plenty of housing, very good railway/motorway links and close to Bristol.

milinhas · 18/04/2021 16:18

I also wouldn’t recommend Bridgwater specifically but basically any other town or village nearby is nice!

Atalune · 18/04/2021 16:43

Burnham on Sea is an area of high deprivation and has some of the lowest life expectancies in Somerset Confused

Mark is really really quiet, with not much going on I would say.

ChessieFL · 18/04/2021 16:46

Agree with others. Somerset is lovely. Bridgwater is not.

GlubGlubGlub · 18/04/2021 17:10

It’s a dump. If you live in the SE, I’m assuming that you will have a healthy budget. The chew valley area or Bristol would be be a better bet.

CrumpetsForAll · 18/04/2021 17:15

Ha! I live in the region and clicked on this as my first reaction was ‘Eww, Why?!!’ Not surprised time read you’ve never been!

Much nicer places within 10/20 mins, Bridgewater itself is a pretty nondescript selection of concrete

StarsonaString · 18/04/2021 17:38

What are you looking for in terms of facilities and vibe? Then people can recommend. Personally, I would say Bridgwater and Yeovil are the worst towns in Somerset.

Wells, Frome, Glastonbury, and Street are much nicer. Cheddar and Axminster are small but pretty.

PawsandWhiskers · 18/04/2021 17:41

There are some lovely places in Somerset... Bridgwater is not one of them!

vodkaredbullgirl · 18/04/2021 17:41

Nope not Bridgwater, neighbouring villages maybe.

worriedatthemoment · 18/04/2021 18:38

I live near in another town that people have said no to , prob people that have never lived there mind.
Good and bad places in all areas even some of the villages have problems and Im sure bridgewater has a good side somewhere , WSM isn't amazing either yet people have mentioned it.
I would say go and look at a place maybe stay for a few nights walk around and get a feel, but bridgewater isn't considered great locally but there will be many that like it.

worriedatthemoment · 18/04/2021 18:41

Also lots if new build estates going up / gone up

worriedatthemoment · 18/04/2021 18:44

Also it does depend where you move from , my parents have moved down here and love it , even in the town that others have said not to, live in a nice road .
I think unless you have lived in a fair few places its hard to make comparisons of what is good , my parents love it so much more than where they were before and had lived for many years

FlatToppedTree · 18/04/2021 18:49

Sorry, I agree with others. It doesn't have a great reputation around here 😬.

Personally I like WSM, always seems to be something going on during non-Covid times. But I do live semi-rural, boring village life with not much going on.

If you let us know what kind of community, vibe and amenities you'd like I'm sure we can suggested somewhere Grin

callingon · 18/04/2021 18:51

Weston used to be very rough and I’ve always found it very depressing - there’s a reason Banksy was inspired to put dismaland there. I suppose if you can find the kitsch in it it might be for you? I know some people do. Or it might be nicer now... tbh ime of the SW I think a lot of rural towns are on the cusp of very nice/very depressing. I’d definitely recommend spending some time in the SW before committing to a move.
