So proud of my son!

I’m so excited, I have to share!

My twins are 4, both are autistic and non verbal but DT1 is absolutely obsessed with the alphabet. Until recently neither of them showed any signs of understanding spoken words at all.

This morning he brought over his box of magnetic letters and starting handing me the letters to get me to say words starting with each letter.

When I said a is for alligator, he tried to spell alligator.

Then he went through each letter and spelled ball, cat, dog, elephant (but left out one e) and fish when I said the words.

After that he stopped spelling the words I said and started spelling other words - goat, house, jump and key. He must have gotten these words from books. I thought he was starting to read but still amazed at how much he can spell.

I’m so excited - I went through a long legal battle to get them into the right school and they’re both coming on so well. They both understand so much more and and now DT2 will give me a kiss when I ask for a kiss so he’s understanding more too.

DT1 has shown he can copy words and spell some words from memory like numbers, but this is the first time he’s spelled words from speech.

Here’s his attempt at alligator - I’m actually pleased he makes mistakes in some words as it suggests he’s trying to remember how to spell them and not just regurgitating things he’s remembered.

I have no idea if this is age appropriate and just seems advanced because he is delayed everywhere else but I’m so proud of him - it’s so much harder for him to learn things and he is trying so hard.

We had two years where we just saw no progress at all and now they are both coming along so well. I feel really hopeful that they will be able to learn to communicate which means life will be much easier for them.

So proud of my son!

I know the floating on Cloud 9 feeling you have right now, bask in it, it's one of the most amazing feelings a parent can have, your son is an absolute shining star!

I’m starting to think he has some kind of physical or coordination issue that prevents speech as he only makes one sound even though he is definitely understanding more

My dd's speech was very poor/behind and years later I found out that the muscles used for speech are also used for chewing.
Please see a SLT and ask if there are any exercises that can help him.

I also think showing him how to text and/or use the keypad on an ipad is a fabulous idea.

Ahhh that's beautiful. What a clever lad

Crocky · 18/04/2021 13:28

How lovely. That’s really made me smile today.

SALT dismissed any concerns about functional issues because he has no issues chewing. I am certain he had a tongue tie as a baby as he couldn’t breastfeed and when bottle feeding most of the milk fell out of his mouth. But he’s never had an issue with solids.

I’m wondering if it’s something like apraxia of speech but until his understanding improves he couldn’t do the necessary exercises any way. The only sound he can make is ga, and he only really makes sounds when he’s excited rather than attempts at speech. Hopefully the gains in understanding mean that we can encourage him to do the exercises in future. If he does speak I expect he will be one of those children who starts speaking in sentences as he obviously already knows lots of words and what they mean, whereas DT2 makes a lot more sounds and sometimes tries at speech.

They’re a confusing pair! It’s crazy that last year I had an EP saying he must have learning disabilities but I don’t see any signs his intelligence is impaired, he’s obviously smart. Just need to access the things he knows!

What a clever boy!

There is a wonderful blog here about a little girl with autism and the AAC app she uses: niederfamily.blogspot.com/

Hempden · 18/04/2021 15:55

Amazing OP, very happy for you!

SinkGirl · 18/04/2021 16:03

Thanks everyone! I hope it didn’t make anyone think I’m a horrible bragger - it’s just nice to have a milestone to celebrate, and maybe give some hope to those in a similar situation to us a couple of years ago.

This is so wonderful to see, OP. I was so pleased to see it was you, as I know the last 4 years have not been easy.

I had wondered if it was from Wilf’s mum as I always loved her updates. Maybe you can keep MN updated on the DTs triumphs over the coming years! I love a celebration!

growinggreyer · 18/04/2021 16:15

No, don't worry, I think we all love this sort of bragging. Star for your boy and Flowers for you.

Definitely not. This Xmas I wrote a short round robin letter that did brag the tiniest bit about my DC - because I was told they were a superstar in a particular class. Slightly different to the normal round robins that describe how the DC are entering the Olympic team or Oxbridge (again for that family). A mature parent will celebrate their own children's achievements. So please go ahead! We will celebrate with you.

PS. my round robin letter was only half a side of A4. Most of that was about the cat.

LeonoraFlorence · 18/04/2021 21:42

What a star! 🌟 Sounds like you’ve got two lovely boys.

Embracelife · 18/04/2021 21:47
