Well they were white once. Now kind of yellowy and stained. Do I put them in a pillow case? Have you done this or is it best to bin them? Tia.

Defo wash. I wash trainers all the time, come out like new!
Only use a little powder or liquid as they really foam up.
No need for a pillow case either.

Have you got a tub of Pink Stuff?

DP did the white bits round the bottom of his trainers with some and a toothbrush. Looked shop new!

PoTheDog · 18/04/2021 09:11

I'm always worried about damaging my washing machine doing this. I just scrub mine in hot soapy water and use stain remover on any stubben bits.

In fact, on of today's jobs is to wash all my winter trainers and get my summer ones out Smile (that makes it sounds like I have loads: I don't, 2 black for winter and 2 white for summer)

hauntedvagina · 18/04/2021 09:14

I always wash trainers in the washing machine.

I take the laces out and put those in bag, chuck the trainers straight in.

I don't spin them as that can make them curl up (and probably fuck up your washing machine).

TuvoknotSpock · 18/04/2021 09:15

Ah you've answered my question as don't want to break the machine!

2pinkginsplease · 18/04/2021 09:20

I wash all our trainers and converse in the machine. I spin them too. They come out like new.

ISpeakJive · 18/04/2021 09:56

I put my Converse and Toms in there on a 30 min cycle at 30°.
They are as good as new

VienneseWhirligig · 18/04/2021 09:59

I wouldn't, but only because I managed to wreck some Vans by washing them in the machine. I whitened my Converse last year with Vanish foam, whitening toothpaste and a toothbrush. It took ages but they looked great.

SusannaMorvern · 18/04/2021 10:02

I used to, but then turned the glue brown after washing one pair.
I now clean them by hand and use a magic eraser on the rubber bits.

LetsGoChamp · 18/04/2021 10:04

I chuck mine straight in, like PP said on a 30 min cycle.

I normally pop some stain remover spray on them and about 1/2 the normal detergent. Come out like new but it’s not something you’d want to do all the time as it probably would end up ruining them long term.

ElderMillennial · 18/04/2021 10:05

I have washed trainers in the wash, not converse but can't see why it would be an issue if just the fabric ones

Ducksurprise · 18/04/2021 10:06

My rule of thumb with washing machines is if I want it washing and if I can fit it in the hole, in it goes.
All shoes including leather school shoes, and football/rugby boots, rucksacks, lunch boxes, door mats and hall runners (this requires a bit of skill to get it all into the machine DH says it doesn't fit but some rug origami works a trick) basically anything and washing machine seem to last as long as my friends who are more careful with what they put in.

RuggerDownHere · 18/04/2021 10:09

I wash Skechers trainers as we all wear them on holiday in the theme parks in Florida so they are rank with sweat.

I remove the laces and put those in a wash bag and I put a bath sheet into the machine to soften the trainers impact inside the machine. They go on at 30 on a delicates cycle so more of a rock than a complete turn by the drum. Never had an issue. You just need a short delicate cycle, low temp, even cold. I would risk it.

thenightsky · 18/04/2021 10:10

I tried it once and it made the glue go all dark and seep out a bit, so it showed on the outside of the shoe. Plus it sounded like it was murdering my washing machine!

RuggerDownHere · 18/04/2021 10:12

Should have said the Skechers are the fabric ones not leather. Like these

This is brilliant Grin I do the same with varying degrees of success!

The best tip I ever learnt for washing white canvas trainers is to wrap them with tissue/ toilet roll/ kitchen roll as they dry. My vans came out of the machine sparkly white but yellowed as they dried so I rewashed them and dried away from any light wrapped in tissue and they looked fab.

Yes, that's exactly what happened to me, I'd washed different pairs lots of times, and it wasn't a even a hot wash.
