I need to use a months annual leave in August! Any idea what I could do?

For various reasons I was unable to take much leave last year. I ended up in hospital following an emergency operation during a time I had actually planned some holiday so my employer has given me the time back however it needs to be used by September.

Due to project work, August is the best time for me to take time off. A foreign holiday looks unlikey but I think I will find a cottage in the UK for a few days.

Im so terrible at taking time off and have partly ended up with so many days as I find it to hard sit still/be alone!

Will just be me for much of the time, DD18 may tag along for few days.

I dont have a significant hobby but could paint the house i suppose 😬. Any better ideas would be welcomed!

Could they pay you the days if you prefer?

Northernsoullover · 17/04/2021 12:27

Can you do shorter weeks?

TomHardyAndMe · 17/04/2021 12:28

@Honeydukesmum

Could they pay you the days if you prefer?
Not legally if they are part of statutory leave entitlement.
Lou98 · 17/04/2021 12:29

Could you use them to finish earlier/start later on the days you're working?

Lazypuppy · 17/04/2021 12:29

Any stuff at home that needs doing? Last year we had 3 weeks off to do out garden, build some decking etc.

I've just had a week off and spent it at home, but that is what i have always done so seems normal to me.

I'd live a month off, no early starts, time yo enjoy being in your own home, decorate etc.

You could Housesit/pet sit/Workaway in a different part of the uk?

Iflyaway · 17/04/2021 12:33

Yea, take a few days out and for the rest chill out at home.

I love being alone! I find it a respite from the crazy world out there!

But then again I'm a single mum, he's adult now so really AM alone, relish being able to do what I want, when I want, how I want.

I can always call up a friend to go out for a coffee or whatnot.

Thanks everyone! I have booked a few days here and there already but the bulk of the time (20 working days) really needs to be taken in August as I have a project finishing in July and another starting in September.

I probably should have a look at jobs that need doing at home and the home/pet stay idea is a really good one

How about a challenge? You could walk the coast to coast path? (For example!)

I think a mix of shorter weeks and then perhaps only a fortnight or three weeks off.

Is there one of those challenges, if that is the right word, that you could do for part of the time? Visit every museum in the area, or every church, or even every cafe one each morning, something like that.

I am imagining plenty of parents who would love a job where they could have four weeks off in August!

BrieAndChilli · 17/04/2021 12:40

Do you have family you could visit or invite friends to come and stay for a couple of days.

FleetwoodRaincoat · 17/04/2021 13:06

I'd do a tour of the country. Take a tent, or stay in cheap B and Bs. Or both.

Great fun to plan and you can get to see all sorts of interesting stuff.

HotChoc10 · 17/04/2021 13:33

I had 3 weeks off between jobs a few years ago and it was great. I'm in London so I just spent the time going to different bits of the city on my own, going to cafes and parks and galleries. Could do something similar with day trips near wherever you are?

Kezzie200 · 17/04/2021 16:14

A house swap with a teacher family? Depends where you are located to some extent.

FindingMeno · 17/04/2021 16:52

Festival? Learn something new? A few pamper days? Day trips to the beach?
