I have adhd and really struggle with house work. I have a lot of white furniture which shows dust badly. I hate hate hate dusting. What products/cloths do you use? How often do you dust? Any tips?

Get a pledge fluffy duster to get up the surface dust then you only have to move and properly polish when it's getting dull

Keeping the floors well vacuumed helps reduce how much dust settles too so run the hoover around as frequently as you can be bothered to do. You can also use the pipe attachment with brush to suck up dust from surfaces.

Either dry dust quickly and hoover later or use a damp cloth. Any cloth is fine. One of those yellow generic dusters for example. Use a few and them chuck them in the wash.

Maybe every week or so?

I use these. One does all the surfaces, window sills, my doors which have little dust collecting grooves, the fireplace, mirrors and picture frames. I live in a standard sized 3 bed semi.
I do it once a week. I work in a circle round each room, move stuff, take stuff off the surface, wipe, pop stuff back.

Balls won’t seem to let me attach the picture. But it’s the Pledge dry dusting cloths.

Get a cleaner?

Itwasgoodwhileitlasted · 17/04/2021 10:43

Those pledge dry dusters are the biz.

I hate dusting too, so I sympathise!
I use a variety of cloths - some microfiber ones (bought before I knew they're bad for the environment), some old flannels, and the old-fashioned yellow cotton dusters. They hold the dust better if you wet them first, then wring out excess water so they are just damp. Rinse them regularly (at least between rooms) to vet rid of the dust you've collected.

Start at the top and work down. So light shades first, then high shelves/eye-level cupboards, then work surfaces/tops of cupboards, then skirting boards. Do your blinds before you do the windowsill.

Dusting is much quicker and easier if you don't have excessive stuff that you have to move around. See if you can declutter first. Put on a podcast or some music to make it less boring.

How often you do it depends on how quickly the room gets dusty and also your tolerance of dust! If you have friends round, low lighting makes it less obvious. If things are really bad, just think of Quentin Crisp, who said, "There is no need to do any housework at all. After the first four years, the dust doesn't get any worse".

You don't need to dust everything, every week. Have a look at The Organised Mum Method - she has some schedules so everything gets done regularly, without cleaning taking over your life. You can adapt her ideas to suit your situation.

Low lighting makes the dust less obvious, I mean, not the friends.

Undiagnosed ADHD here - my son was diagnosed & I'm 90% certain I have it too. I used to really struggle with housework but my trick to get it done is audiobooks on Bluetooth headphones plus gloves. Only way I can cope with it!

LudoBear · 17/04/2021 11:41

Thanks for the tips. I really need to get into a routine with housework. I'm actually undiagnosed but have my assessment in June.

A small leaf blower and a dust extractor. Blow the dust off the furniture and then leave air purifier on to collect it.

I bought a fluffy duster thing from sainsburys and it picks up the dust then I shake it outside. It goes in the wash every now and again. I have one upstairs and one downstairs and it's really helping me keep on top of the dust. It picks everything up and doesn't spread the dust around at all. I don't use any furniture spray.

I dust delicate ornaments with it by gently patting them and it even works just by doing that.
