Family member had FLOT chemo 2 weeks ago.
Now has haematuria.
Not normal for her.
Any advice?

What’s the patients diagnosis, age, when did they last have their blood counts checked?
Cells are at their lowest 10-14 days following chemotherapy so I’m concerned that their platelets are so low it’s causing them to bleed. But have they had their counts checked in recent days?
Anyway, no this cannot wait till Monday. They should’ve been given a number to call if they spike a temperature, become unwell etc. Please call now - not in an hour, now, because uncontrolled bleeding can be life threatening.

It might be worth asking also ‘could this be haemorrhagic cystitis?’ When they call. I’m not familiar with FLOT chemo but it is a known side effect of some chemo drugs.

I'm a nurse but chemo isn't my area. Wouldn't until wait until Monday, did the chemo unit not give you a 24 hour number to ring for any concerns like this?

I’m a chemo nurse.
This can’t wait until Monday. She should have a 24hr helpline number that she is able to ring. She may have UTI, does she have any other symptoms with it, does it hurt when she passes urine? Is she passing urine very frequently? Has she any pain in her kidney area?

Hortuslover · 16/04/2021 22:15

Is she due to have chemo again next week?

Boph · 16/04/2021 22:18

Not a nurse but a former chemo patient. She will have a 24 hour helpline to ring. She will have been told if in doubt ring, and importantly, do not wait and see how it goes. Chemo patients get very ill, very quickly.

hairymuffet · 16/04/2021 22:50

Chemo line shuts at 8pm.
She has no other symptoms of uti
No temperature
It seems to have settled now

Glad things have settled down.
Chemo line should be 24 hours a day which includes the hours the chemo unit is actually open!
If she is due chemo again this week, please make sure she mentions her haematuria to her nurse, they will be able to dip her urine and discuss her symptoms with a consultant or registrar.
Hope all goes well.

Thanks everyone. All fine today. I will ensure she mentions it at appt next week
