Is anyone else massively affected by the weather?

I live in drizzly NI and have had depression for about 12 years but on the rare days we get a bit of sunshine my mood is amazing and I feel fantastic. I get so much done, I feel so energetic. I have a SAD lamp for the rest of the time but tbh I don’t feel much better for using it. I’m shocked at how much better I feel every time we have a sunny day.

yes, I think I have weather depression

Spottysausagedogs · 16/04/2021 23:03

Yes is this a thing? Weather depression? I have this and need to live in a place where it is sunny year round which is why I can't wait for covid to be over so I can get this achieved!

Gertie75 · 16/04/2021 23:04

Me, so much so my mood changes throughout the day, we're currently on holiday and have had two lovely mainly blue sky days, I feel so much happier when the sun shines but instantly feel less happy when it goes behind a cloud.

SylviaPlath1984 · 16/04/2021 23:05

I live in NI too, and I don't think we do tooooo badly for sunny days overall you know, no worse than the rest of the uk lol.

But yes I do feel awful on miserable days. Just totally low and foggy feeling, even lack of energy I'd say too. However the minute the sun is out I'm out the door and down to the beach and feel a million times better. If the suns out I'm out! The few nice days we have had this week we have been down to Helen's bay beach with the kids after school and had a great time, I feel so strongly about how much better I am when it's sunny that I will never pass an opportunity to get out when it's sunny.

I just saw this and thought yes!! I'm full of static today. Obviously that's not what you mean though

SynchroSwimmer · 16/04/2021 23:26

I have definitely noticed dogs are happier when it’s sunny, and horses too.

missbunnyrabbit · 16/04/2021 23:35

Me too. When the sky is cloudy, I feel awful. But when it's blue, I feel light and want to do things.

RaisinforBeing · 16/04/2021 23:37

That is totally me too. Does sunlight give you serotonin or dopamine or something? I don’t think I’m depressed but I feel 200% better when it’s sunny.

BogRollBOGOF · 16/04/2021 23:41

Yes. I struggle with motivation on dull overcast days. Winter is a slog. Sunshine gives me so much more energy.
Some rain is fine, but days of relentless rain where the sky hasn't lightened are awful too.

Winter 19/20 was horrendous. Months of relentless rain. Bonfire night cancelled due to waterlogging through to major flooding. Minimal daylight. I was on empty by 20/3/20 which was bad timing!

Bearnecessity · 16/04/2021 23:46

Yes, I feel lighter and happier on sunny days....more so as I get older...

FrankChurchillsHaircut · 16/04/2021 23:53

Yes.

I have found forcing myself to go outdoors more this winter/ spring has helped keep my head above water as it were.
But actual pleasant weather is a total tonic!

Susannahmoody · 17/04/2021 01:07

Yup. Life in Canada and even when it's freezing cold the skies are blue so all is well with the world. Makes a massive difference

Susannahmoody · 17/04/2021 01:08

*Live, not life

UhtredRagnarson · 17/04/2021 07:21

@Susannahmoody I have family in Canada and my aunt posts photos of her daily dog walks and even in the coldest winter they look so fabulous and just so refreshing!

Totally affected by the weather yes. Sun =energy and happiness, any thing else and I'm sloth personified.

peak2021 · 17/04/2021 08:44

Not by the weather, but by the amount and time of daylight. Hence why I would like BST all year around.

JimBobNoJob · 17/04/2021 11:25

Yes I function so much better when the weather is sunny and warmer. Winters are so long and drawn out and I hate being cold!
I practically live in the garden in summer.

devildeepbluesea · 17/04/2021 11:28

BigWolfLittleWolf · 17/04/2021 11:32

I’m the opposite.
I like a sunny spring day but ‘proper’ hot, sunny summer weather I can’t stand.
I can’t cope in the heat at all, breathing is more difficult, i sweat buckets, i chafe, hayfever means I sneeze a lot and three kids means I piss myself with each sneeze.
I get really depressed through summer, I can’t bear it and count down the days until it is over

AlfonsoTheTerrible · 17/04/2021 11:59

Yes. Sun + longer days = energy and happiness. Grey = sluggishness.

Embracingthechaos · 17/04/2021 12:01

I have lived in North Queensland for a few years now and I have to say, if I'm feeling down it is pretty great to be able to just go outside and take in the sunshine. I'm not happy all the time, obviously, but it certainly lifts my mood.
