Do you get your DC one big present or lots of smaller presents?

For their birthdays, do they get a big thing, or lots of little things?

I usually get a big thing and some smaller token gifts.

But I'm stumped for a big present this year, all the things nearly 8yo DD wants are just too pricey (e.g. a machine that'll run Minecraft Java edition - you need Windows or Mac OS for that - minimum I can see one for is about £300! She'll just have to put up with Minecraft pocket edition on her tablet for the foreseeable!).

I can think of lots of smaller things she'd like (bloody LOL dolls etc!) and could easily fill a basket with toy, but it doesn't feel right to not give her a big present as I always have done.

Am I overthinking it? What do you do?

When mine were that age it was a couple of larger things and then some smaller presents.

They were usually things which they'd been talking about for a while.

Whatever works really, one or the other. I've mainly done several smaller things most years.

The "big present" ideas do get more expensive as they get older. DH gets very hung up on needing one if those each year but I don't really. I think it's fine if they have a big present one year and some smaller things other years.

So it's nearly DDs 8th birthday.
She has
2 book sets (15 books in total)
A rocket launcher (air pump one)
Bop it
Football
Harry Potter sweets

3 kids. All birthdays follow this pattern. They always seem happy with what they get.
Christmas they usually get the same but with a bike or scooter or something.

It depends. When they need a big present eg bike that’s what they get. The other years they get lots of small presents.

Just had my 8yr old DD's birthday and she got
A Fitbit
A hoody
A top
A 3D pen
A stationery set
Hama beads
A science kit
A foot spa
Lip balm
Nail polish
Sweets

Lots of good ideas here, I think I may steal some, thanks!

I think I'd prefer to give her a large present but I can't think of anything that fits the bill so it'll have to be lots of little things. Unless inspiration strikes very soon!...

OMG, Bop it!! You're BRAVE! Kudos!! Grin

She's full of energy and just the name sounded like something she'd be into. I googled it and I'm I couldn't even get through the promotional video!! I hope you have a huge house or the patience of a saint?!!

I get a main present then little ones. But they are still little so it's easy to think of things they'd want and don't have

AnnaSW1 · 15/04/2021 22:48

I love bop it by the way!

ladywithnomanors · 15/04/2021 22:48

It really depends on what they want.
My DD is 11 next week , this is what she’s receiving.

£100 in cash from her dad so she can go shopping post lockdown

Vans
Dungarees
Leggings
Crop tops 🙈
Warrior Cat books
Lindor Chocolates

howmanyhats · 18/04/2021 22:23

Got DD lots of presents, no big one. She loved them and appeared not to notice in the slightest that there wasn't a big present!

I was definitely overthinking!
