Selling jewellery?

Can you do this safely online without being ripped off? Or would it be better to go to an actual jewellers? How do you know if they're reputable? Sorry if these are daft questions!

I’d also be interested to know this. A relative plans to leave me a lot of big gold jewellery and I’d like to sell it on and buy something I will actually wear to remember them by

Yes, that's more or less why I'm looking into it. My dm left some jewellery to dd. Dd says she won't ever wear it, so I figured it would be a good compromise to sell some of it so she can buy something she will wear, and that will remind her of her grandma.

Good luck to us both!

You’d be better going to a reputable local auction house. They’d give you a free valuation if you intend to sell it through them & you can set a reserve of the lowest price you’d be willing to sell it for. Then if it doesn’t reach that price it won’t be sold for peanuts.

A goldsmith could melt down the gold and make exactly what you want, you'd pay less than normal bespoke because you would be supplying the gold (and possibly stones if the old jewellery has any).

Thank you @Darklane and @Pinkywoo, those are both good suggestions.
