Insurance for Cleaner etc.

LemonMeringueThreePointOneFour · 14/04/2021 12:54

I'm trying to hire a cleaner and have been told they must have public liability insurance. No self employed cleaners seem to have this.

Is there a type of insurance I can get myself to protect against accidental damage and injury as a result of someone carrying out paid work in (and around, i.e. outside) my property?

I'd be really grateful if people only give info they are confident is accurate! Thank you.

I wouldn’t employ a cleaner who didn’t have public liability insurance tbh not a helpful response I appreciate

Well I do not know if it's the area I live in, but absolutely none of them seem to have it.

Not sure why my phone went so formal! Thought I'd typed, "I don't know..." Grin

I'd like to reiterate they should have it. I'm a self employed gardener and my annual policy is just over £70. So not quite £1.50 a week. Whilst I've never needed it, I wouldn't be without it.

I do have a good friend who is a self employed cleaner and she managed to break an expensive ornament on a low windowsill with the end of the hoover. She didn't have insurance and it cost her £600 to replace. Funnily enough she now has it.

Not that this helps you in your position op.

Is it not illegal to work without tpl insurance? Your cleaners sound well dodgy backhander not declaring tax income etc types?

sunflowersandbuttercups · 14/04/2021 18:42

They need to have insurance.

Cleaning is a bit like dog-walking (my industry) in that there's actually no legal requirement to have insurance so many people don't bother.

There's no such thing as "my cleaners" as I haven't hired anyone because I can't find anyone with public liability insurance despite everyone saying they ought to have it! Hmm

Ok, I should have said ‘the cleaners you have spoken with but have declined their services’.

I’m sure you know what I meant. I’m not trying to say you would employ anyone dodgy, all I’m saying that THEY sound dodgy Smile

If you can’t find any cleaners with insurance your home contents insurance might cover breakages etc. You could call and check.

boredinthouse · 15/04/2021 09:51

I'm not sure why they don't have it to be honest, I'm self employed in a different sector and I have public liability insurance. It's not expensive or difficult to find an insurer. I'd keep looking for a properly insured one. Have you tried an agency?

mummyof4kids · 15/04/2021 09:53

Cleaner here.
I'm self employed and have public liability insurance, never needed it but I'm glad I have it.
I wouldn't employ someone to work in my home that didn't have it

UhtredRagnarson · 15/04/2021 09:55

Mine PL insurance is only £80ish for the year.
