Baby head guard for washing hair...need recommendations

The ones I've seen on Amazon have mixed reviews so was looking for some recommendations on what you've used and works for your baby.
My son hates getting his hair washed so I'm hoping a guard will help.

Have sent you a pm

We found the better option was to hold a face cloth across their eyes, they're soon happy to do this themselves & gives them some sense of control. Using a jug helps too & if either of you Bath with him, allowing him to pour it over your head. Encouraging bubble blowing in the Bath etc.

Best of luck

Mine would never consent to a head guard that is actually worn on the head. A "waterfall" type hair wash jug was much more acceptable. Plus nb you really don't need to wash hair very often providing it doesn't have yoghurt in it!

I never found a head guard that worked, but when my DC were little, I would tell them to look at the ceiling, their heads were so far back, I just put my hand on their foreheads to shield their eyes, and poured water down the back of their heads - it never went in their eyes. Not sure if I've explained well, hope it makes sense!

Agree with pp that flannel is the way to go. Save your money on Amazon crap. It'll just go in the bin

ohidoliketobe · 14/04/2021 22:58

Agree with PPs - face cloth over eyes, flexible hair rinse jug and repeat "look up to the ceiling" about 38 times

Popcornbetty · 14/04/2021 22:59

Another vote for jug and a face cloth

Horehound · 15/04/2021 09:59

Lol thanks all. Timeihadanamechange is sending me one which is very kind.
I used a jug but he absolutely hates it. O really only wash his hair once a week but he had cradle cap so I think I should be washing more often?

Have you tried rubbing baby oil into your son's scalp then gently washing afterwards with his usual shampoo? This really helped clear up a patch of cradle cap my first dc had. The shampoos and treatments were useless.

Soubriquet · 15/04/2021 12:59

I used one of these

You can buy them at Sainsbury’s but I think I got mine at aldi during a baby event

The front of the jug is flexible so when it’s pressed against the head, it sort creates a seal so the water won’t flow forward only backwards

I have and it didn't seem to do much. I didn't do it very often though, maybe that's the trick? I read about using head and shoulders which I tried once but he screamed and I washed it off immediately...thought it was maybe too sore on his head. But I also don't use oils because that = hair washing and that = screaming and crying and refusing to get in the bath the next time!!

Its hard!

This might not help but my DD hated having hair washed (we tried everything, but nothing helped), it got so bad that she just didn't want to get in the bath at all. So we just stopped hair washing all together (much to my mums horror). It actually wasn't too bad, looked a bit greasy for a month but then she seemed to reach that 'self cleaning' hair thing that people talk about which I've always assumed to be rubbish.

Gradually bath times got much less stressful, once she knew we weren't going to make her wash her hair. Now she will happily rinse her hair (still no shampoo, but to be honest it doesn't seem to need it).

Just thought I'd mention in case the guard doesn't work...don't despair!

Horehound · 15/04/2021 15:51

Thank you @Smashedpotatoes. Yeh I mean that's kinda where I'm at but o haven't gone as far as just not washing. I will wipe his hair with a damp sponge and that seems ok for now although he does have lots of hair!! Taking him to the hairdresser on Saturday and dreading that too. He has had his hair clippers twice and went ballistic each time but it really needed cut!

I feel this probably contributed to his hair washing fear at bathtime :( poor thing lol

For cradle cap I used the dentinox cradle cap shampoo and that worked well

Though he still had some left by time he was a toddler and I used the nitty gritty to get it out and it hasn’t been back since

DappledThings · 15/04/2021 18:23

My 5 and 3 year olds still hate it. We do it once a week and just push on through. They do both make an almighty fuss and scream about it but they go straight from rinsing hair into cuddles so they soon get over it.

MimiSunshine · 15/04/2021 18:33

I find getting my children to lie on their belly in bath then look up to the ceiling with their head as far back as they can makes it easier to wash hair without too much going into their eyes

Popcornbetty · 15/04/2021 19:40

@Horehound you have to rub it on and leave it to sink in then wash off but if you've done that maybe the shampoo targeted at it may help; they didnt for my son. I also found changing shampoo can help too, asda's own baby shampoo always worked well for mine and now they use vosene kids.

Have you tried this kind of jug?

pinkpantsrock · 15/04/2021 19:52

swimming goggles.... stops water & soap getting to their eyes.

I got the big face ones as easier getting on and off
