How much driving lessons cost these days?

CateTown · 13/04/2021 18:01

DD is 17 in the summer and wants driving lessons as her present. How much is the norm?

Depends on location and quality of instructor - between £25-£30 an hour

BluntlySpoken · 13/04/2021 18:12

A relative is doing lessons. It's £58 for a 2 hour session once a week.
Thats one of the cheaper ones around here.

Oblomov21 · 13/04/2021 18:16

£30 an hour in Surrey.

It’s probably worth getting local recs and contacting some now - DSS was 17 in august last year, and had to wait until November (then pushed back to Dec!) for his lessons to start as everyone was so backed up. Also, she can apply for her provisional beforehand - it just becomes valid when she turns 17, that way she can book a theory test for soon after if she wants.

oreosoreosoreos · 13/04/2021 18:20

Sorry, didn’t actually answer the question -
About £30 an hour here too, Gloucestershire!

MeadowHay · 13/04/2021 18:22

Mine are £26.50 an hour but if you do block bookings of 10 or 20hrs the price per lesson reduces a bit. My instructor also used to do a student discount but not sure if he still does or not. DH only used to pay £21 an hour with him a few years ago as a student. We are in the NW.

TheMusclesBrigade · 13/04/2021 18:24

£18-25 here (midlands) depending on which instructor you go with

sunflowersandbuttercups · 13/04/2021 18:30

Cumbria here.

£26 an hour, but you got a discount if you booked in blocks.

CateTown · 13/04/2021 18:30

Thanks for replies. It's £34 an hour here which seems steep.

I’d get her on a waiting list now, round here they’re all absolutely full and have a 3 month waiting list

CateTown · 13/04/2021 20:07

Yes, will definitely book now, just hadn't budgeted for £34 !

We've just been getting PAYG learner insurance. £8.20 for two hours, and it's super-fun taking them out yourself

CateTown · 14/04/2021 07:26

Did you teach them from "scratch" or did they have lessons for a while?

FoxyTheFox · 14/04/2021 07:34

The main drawback with going out and teaching them yourself is that you can't do any motorway practice as learners can't go on the motorway unless the car has dual controls and they're driving with an instructor. It's also a way to pass on a multitude of bad habits that people often aren't aware they have. My friend is a driving instructor and can always tell who has been out for lessons with a friend/family member before starting paid lessons as they usually have certain habits that need correcting Grin

FoxyTheFox · 14/04/2021 07:36

I'd do a mix of paid for lessons and practice lessons in your own car, the dual controls and qualified instructor come in very handy particularly from a safety point of view.

GoWalkabout · 14/04/2021 07:43

About £52 for two hours here, and instructors have long waiting lists. We were thinking have 6-10 weekly lessons then maybe fortnightly plus lots of practice. But lockdown keeps getting in the way!

needadvice54321 · 14/04/2021 08:39

About £30 an hour, usually a bit cheaper if you book a block. DS is learning through RED and they start off with 6 hours of lessons for the price of 4.

I've been taking DS out, nerve wracking at first but great fun now!

That's a very good point. DS is keen to do more than we do - we stick to practicing in a car park, basic steering/gear changing/ positioning etc. I wouldn't want to do more as I fear my driving might teach him some bad habits! BlushGrin
StevieG55 · 14/04/2021 09:20

I imagine a lot maybe upwards £30 or there abouts, dependant where u are too though.

It was £18 an hour when I learned nearly 18yr ago in Glasgow.

WeAllHaveWings · 14/04/2021 09:30

Ds(17) hasn't started yet as instructors are full. The one we are waiting for is £30/hr or £250/block of 10.

Once he has been out a few times and the instructor says ok we will start hiring a dual control car for £15/2hrs for practice.

That's interesting! I've not heard of hiring out dual control cars before?!
Sadless · 14/04/2021 09:56

My daughter is starting today she booked before Christmas and the price was 24.50 a hour. When the driving instructor rung up last week its now 25.50 a hour.
In the North West

Sal

WeAllHaveWings · 14/04/2021 09:58

The main reason we are hiring is because we have an old estate car which isn't ideal for learning in. Not sure how I feel about having access to dual controls as I already press the (imaginary) brake as a passenger when dh is driving 🤦🏻‍♀️

Dh has already said I would be better taking him out for practice as he isnt as calm or patient 🤔

Ivy48 · 14/04/2021 10:02

£27 an hour or I do 1.5 hours for £40 in South Wales as my test centre is a good 20 minutes away from my house. Means I’m not being rushed in my lesson and get time to do manoeuvres. Double check the distance to the test centre and where they’ll do test routes before booking. 1 hours is just enough to do a route for me but not for manoeuvres too
