Is the £15 a month membership worth it? I listen to a lot of podcasts but I'd like to listen to actual books. One a month for £15 seems a lot, can you pay and go?

Help! Thanks!

I think you get 2 a month for £15, it’s one a month for £8 which I have and really enjoy.

helpfulperson · 13/04/2021 17:52

An annual subscription gives you 24 books for around £100 so about £4 each. That's what I get every year.

cariadlet · 13/04/2021 17:58

My membership is £8 and I think it's good value. There are also fairly regular half price and BOGOF sales for members. I sometimes pay sale price rather than using a credit because it's even better value that way.

Best money I spend but I’m interested in the annual membership now. I never heard of it before.

helpfulperson · 13/04/2021 18:09

I only found it by accident. I think I went into 'my account ' and it was there as an option

MojoJojo71 · 13/04/2021 18:10

I pay £8 and love it. Just finished listening to a couple of great books by a forensic anthropologist. I didn’t know you could get an annual one though, think I might have a look at that.

cariadlet · 13/04/2021 18:10

@helpful person That really is a helpful post. I've been on the one credit a month membership for a few years. That must have been the default one when I joined.

That costs me £7.99 a month which seemed good. But it's a total of £95.88 a year.

Annual membership is £69.99 for 12 books (so the same number of books but £26 cheaper than paying every month).

24 book annual membership is £109.99 so just over £13 a year more than I pay now for an extra 12 books. Definitely time to change my membership.

beepbeepbonk · 13/04/2021 18:58

These are my only options, one credit a month?

So are there lots of free books included with both kinds of membership but plus gives me a credit to get something "better", can you buy audio books if you're not a premium member?

I'm so confused !

Might be worth checking what your library has on offer. Ours has a really good selection of audio books and it's obviously totally free. Spotify also has podcasts (in case you have a subscription for it and didn't know).

Brogues · 13/04/2021 19:32

My library has started offering audiobooks online but doesn’t always have the latest releases or missing books in a series plus you sometimes have to wait until someone else has finished with it.

I got audible free for four months with an 02 contact and when I cancelled audible offered 50% off for a further four months which I’m tempted by.

CatFaceCats · 13/04/2021 19:42

They look like weird options! Is that direct from the website?

schroeder · 13/04/2021 19:44

Another vote for checking out what the library is offering for free.

CatFaceCats · 13/04/2021 19:44

I didn’t think audible tied to Apple at all - hence why you can’t use the app to download titles. You normally have to use safari to access the website, use your credit and then open the app and download. If it’s an iPhone.

I spend £7.99 a month and absolutely love it.

AgnesNaismith · 13/04/2021 19:47

I love audible. The one most important thing I think everyone should know about it is that you can return any of your books, at any time, and receive the refund of a credit. Cake

I loved this feature till I learned that if you do this the author has to repay the fee they got from Audible
ProfYaffle · 13/04/2021 19:52

Those options do look odd, try going to audible.co.uk direct. I get the £7.99 option which gets me one audio book a month plus loads of free podcasts.

RubyFakeLips · 13/04/2021 20:04

Maybe it has your country wrong, your image mentions tax not VAT.

Go to the audible uk website directly, creat your account, you can use your Amazon account, get the free trial and 7.99 membership, then login to the app with your account set up. You can always upgrade at a later date if you feel one book isn’t enough.

QueenCrystal · 13/04/2021 20:48

Love audible - well worth the money. Some fantastic podcasts too. I never used to listen to books but some are just brilliant when narrated. Go for it - you won’t regret it! And thanks for the annual fee tip - definitely going to check that out 👍

cariadlet · 13/04/2021 21:10

With returning books, just be aware that although it's a no questions asked policy, there is a time limit. I seem to remember it being quite generous, maybe 6 months.

I got caught out last year. I quite often buy extra audio books in the sales and because I also listen to loads of podcasts, I find that my unlistened audio books often pile up (like the 3 piles of unread books in my bedroom).

I had an audiobook that was so awful I decided to return it but the system didn't let me. Luckily the customer service agent was really nice and because I'd been a member for a few years and had never returned a book before, they did sort it out on the system and returned the book for me and refunded the credit.

AgnesNaismith · 13/04/2021 21:10

@CormoranStrike oh no! Dammit - ok will absolutely stop with that little trick then!

Can’t remember where I read it, but it kind of makes (cruel) sense.

Though it publishers the author, not the fickle reader, so it is really unfair.

CormoranStrike · 13/04/2021 21:13

Punishes, not publishers

bakingdemon · 13/04/2021 21:18

Check out Libby and BorrowBox apps to see if your library subscribes as they're free. The choice is much more limited than Audible, and you can wait ages for things and then three pop up at once and you've got two weeks to listen to them all, so that's annoying - but it is free
