So bored in corporate world

ArwenTheGreat · 13/04/2021 13:43

I've worked for the same multinational organisation in a number of different roles for 22 years (!)

I am beyond bored. I don't mind the work itself, I am in a Change Management sort of role and have managed teams in the past but am currently specialising in a particular type of non-IT change and it's well within my capabilities but just.so.boring. The company is a good employer and it is flexible in terms of hours which works great around family life (single parent to 3 dc 16,12, 6)

I am fed up of the corporate world I think, what I do has use but no purpose. It's different projects but same issues year in year out.

I look at recruitment adverts and whilst there is lots that I can do, I want to do something different! I just don't know how (ironic considering change management is my bag!)

There are so many roles I could tailor my experience and qualifications to but I'm scared of just jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire- ending up in a corporate machine again which is ultimately what's frying my head.

I don't mind doing additional qualifications but I am having an existential career crisis!

Don't really know what the purpose of my post is. I just can't see how to change things up I guess.

What sets your heart on fire?

Difficult one as 22 years of pension, large redundancy were things to go awry, is a lot to give away. Have you had any conversation about career aspirations with your manager (hopefully someone approachable).

I love developing and delivering training. Have had to do lots of this and I really, really enjoy it. I have wondered about lecturing perhaps.

@peak2021 its a hard conversation to have, my organisation sees careers conversations as being about people's upwards aspirations when I don't necessarily want to climb the ladder. And I can't say to my boss "I'm just bored with corporate guff" 🤣

The benefits are good- excellent holiday entitlement, flexible working, good pension, pay better than most in the area- maybe I should just suck it up. Just the thought of doing this for the next 25 years until retirement kills me. What a waste of my life being just a slave to the payslip at the end of each month, only to repeat ad infinitum.

Told you it was an existential crisis!

Why not apply for training roles, the police are always recruiting for these. You could do adult education delivery courses or a CELTA or a PGCE if you have a degree.Be a skills tutor/assessor.Set up your own Change Management training company...

You undervalue what you are doing and achieving for yourself and your family.

turnthebiglightoff · 13/04/2021 16:44

My job is to develop and deliver training, OP. Retail / sales head offices are great places for these sort of jobs!

Brogues · 13/04/2021 17:00

I tried this and it was useful although did also bring up jobs I could never see myself doing (prison governor?) nationalcareers.service.gov.uk/skills-assessment

I am a bit scared I guess - things are very stable and it's a toss up between reliability and knowing I can provide for my family but utter boredom, vs the unknown.

Maybe I need to invest in some big girl pants!

OP, have you considered the public sector. I work in change comms for public sector/emergency services and its fascinating. Even on a stressful, busy, hectic day with a million things flying at me, I still love it.

bonfireheart · 13/04/2021 17:24

We have good holiday entitlement, pension, flexible working, etc.
