Talk to me about shutters

Love the look of them, seem a lot fresher than big, heavy old curtains. Are they considered a bit old hat now though?

Big, heavy old curtains are probably going to be back in favour by the time I get around to installing shutters. Confused

Are they hideously expensive? Most importantly, are they dust magnets, my house is less than spick and span shall we say. Blush

I have them on two windows (we have a long floor to ceiling one that we can't put anything else on) and I like them. They are easier to clean than the slatted blinds we have and they do look nice. They were really expensive tho!

Blondiney · 13/04/2021 10:14

Oh shit, what is really expensive? I almost don't want to know...

If I look out of my suburban terraced window, the 8 front windows I can see on the other side of the street all have shutters, as does the house to my left. They are the net curtain of the modern age. That is not to say they are awful by any means, but they are very standard now. As an aside, I do find it strange so many people don't open them at all, boarding up the windows would have been cheaper, if not quite as attractive.

I love mine

Which is a shame because we are moving house and I don’t think we can afford them in the new place as there are too many windows

We have a big living room window, two medium size windows and a large bedroom window and they cost about 2k

My friends bay window was 1k i think

Yep, they're ubiquitous on my terraced street too which is what was giving me pause for thought. Look so neat and clean though, I can't help but admire them. Hopefully they'll date better than nets! Grin

They’re really popular atm and are expensive imo. I like them too though.

Okay, that price is doable. Just about. I only want them on a bay and a big upstairs bedroom window.

Do they properly block out the light in the bedroom btw?

We had them installed. I love them but they do get very dusty. They were expensive as well- about £2k for one bay window.

In 10 years time curtains will probably be seen as the height of luxury and everyone will be furiously ripping out their shitters.

2K??? Shock

My curtains have never looked so good! Grin

I know. It is a very large window and we are in London if that makes a difference. We are renovating the whole house and that was the one thing I really wanted so we compromised on other things.

A bit drastic - surely they would just buy curtains Wink

PhilCornwall1 · 13/04/2021 11:24

They are like kitchen islands and grey everything. Shutters too will pass.

@Blondiney definitely going to rip out my shitters. Potties all the way from here on out.

Some of my neighbours have them and they look nice in a way, but don’t suit the house style at the same time (30s semi). It looks like they also have curtains behind them in the bedrooms.

I’d only go for it on the very sunny side of the house because the entire idea behind them is to create maximum shade and I’d be concerned about spending loads of money to create a gloomy room.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 13/04/2021 12:33

About 85%

Dh is a light sleeper and needs complete darkness so we have curtains

Dd doesn’t have anything but the shutters

revampneeded · 13/04/2021 12:42

I love my shutters. They're not cheap but often turn out cheaper than curtains.

I'd agree that they're not the best 'blackout' option though.

I have a set on a pair of high french doors, and they have three segments so I can block out the direct sun gradually as it moves across my home office.

One thing I've learned is to get the wider slats - they look smarter/more contemporary somehow (IMO anyway)

TrickyD · 13/04/2021 12:47

I think ‘plantation shutters’ are fine in the Caribbean, but ridiculous on a typical UK house.
They are a fad here in our county town, DS1 who lives in a posh-ish part of London says you see plenty there in skips. The ship has sailed along with feature walls and coloured bathroom suites.

Like many others mine can be adjusted so the bottom half (or 3 quarters) can stay shut and the top part can be opened

We went for the wide ones as well

Blondiney · 13/04/2021 14:49

The lack of blackoutness could be the deal breaker for me. My bedroom gets the sun from early in the morning, as far as I'm concerned it can piss right off. I'd find it irritating having spent all that money and then having to have curtains as well.

On the other hand they do look lovely (especially the wide slats) but yes, can accept that they'd look even better in the Caribbean.

Think you've saved me a couple of grand. Thank you! I'll continue to admire them from afar.
