WTF is this insect biting DH?

DH has been getting bitten on and off for a week, average one bite per day. This happened a few months ago too and then stopped. Having meticulously cleaned the bedroom we had ruled out bed bugs. No one else is getting bitten. We have lived in this house for 3 years and we have no pets. No sign of mice or rats. DH's bites are usually under elastic after areas such as socks and waistbands.

This morning we saw this fucker crawling on him. I took a photo and then it launched itself off him, straight up, and disappeared. I think it jumped as I didn't see wings, so I'm assuming it's a flea. Can anyone confirm? Where the fuck did it come from??

I've seen posts about Indorex but I'm reluctant to use with two very young children in the house. Will it go away on its own or do we have to treat?

That is not a flea

Indorex will kill any kind of bug in the house so I would use it.

Can one of you take the DC out for a couple of hours while the other sprays the house?

That's not a flea.

Can you do a reverse image search on Google see if anything comes up?

picklemewalnuts · 13/04/2021 09:06

That may not be the offender, just a random bug you spotted today.

Thrip?

INeedNewShoes · 13/04/2021 09:09

Check your bedroom windowsill. If there are lots there, it's probably thrips.

When we had an issue with bird mites (which I don't think your photo is) they were coming into my bedroom from the loft through a tiny hole in the ceiling so it's worth looking up to find the source as well.

CherryJane · 13/04/2021 09:12

No idea but we had a flea infestation from God knows where at the start of 2020, as we have no pets etc.

It took me a week to properly decontamination the house.

In the end I opted fir Indorex and it killed everything. It killed bugs fir months until I washed where'd I'd sprayed a few months later (skirting boards for instance). Infact I still fund dead woodlice constantly in my dining room.

You could spray the house in sections. So upstairs one day and fully ventilate it after the permitted sealed room time and keep the kids downstairs all day or make them share a bedroom one night whilst the other is sprayed if it makes you feel better.

Could it be a reaction to the elastic?

Google image search biting insects

Thanks everyone for your replies. I knew people would have some helpful suggestions.

I don't think it's a thrip, but I could be wrong. And yes I take the point that it may not have been the offender!

The reason I assumed flea is that when it launched itself it went incredibly fast - I lost sight of it. I saw no sign of wings. Some pictures of fleas I found online looked comparable.

No evidence of bed bugs and the location of bites around elastic suggest not either. I don't think it's a reaction to elastic as it's so random - three bites on one sock line one day, then another on boxers line two days later. It seems unlikely.

That's the thing with indorex - if it kills bugs on contact for months, do I really want one year old DS, who puts everything in his mouth, licking something with indorex on it? I just feel like I'd rather not do that. But if it's the only option then I'll have to.
