No work to do at work - bored to tears

At work the work load is very sporadic. Some days it's quite full on, and other days there is nothing to do.

The last week I have had barely anything to do. Everything in the office is all organised and tidy as well so there's no busy work to do. My manager knows this and he tells me to sit in the staff room. The last week I have spent around 4-8 hours each work day sitting in the staff room. I'm dreading going into work today as yesterday I didn't even set foot in the office as as soon as I got there I was told there was no work to do until later but then no work ever arrived so I spent my entire work day in the staff room waiting around. Everyday my manager also says a reason why he might have to come find me (e.g. for a signature or to discuss something) which never ends up happening; I feel like he does it to prevent me from leaving early.

I know I'm getting paid but I'm find it so boring that it's starting to make me feel really down. In a different department, staff members are sent home early if there is nothing to do. I'm starting to feel so resentful.

I've started applying for other jobs which makes me sad as when there is work to do I really enjoy my job.

I feel for you OP, I've had a jobs like this in the past. It's soul destroying and weirdly draining. Luckily it was when I was younger with no responsibilities so could just jack the job in.
Keep applying for jobs and hope you get something soon.

Can you bring your own laptop and start an online course or something? A piece of knitting. A Kindle.

GoWalkabout · 13/04/2021 08:23

It is surprisingly tough. Can you take some online courses or do some research into a project for home, or read or draw. Or do yoga.

Being told to sit in the staff room is really odd. I fully understand the drained feeling one gets from not having enough work to do. Have you asked your boss if you can be sent out to a different department?

My job is like this at the minute. I'm luckily furloughed for half my hours as they know it's quiet but the time I'm working goes so slowly. I would much rather be working than just sitting there.

Have you told your manager how you feel? Are you able to help out another department when you're quiet?
Agree that it is draining. And also agree with other posters about doing an online course.
Coding is a good one to learn and I've been on this website when I have been quiet: www.codecademy.com/
Also, Microsoft Learn is great.

Also, I would remain in the office rather than going to the staff room. Or at least mix it up. You are more likely to feel driven to do something sat in the office and you have some company. Plus you might over hear work chats of projects you could get involved in??
