How far would your three year old walk?

Husband thinks our DS could do a 10k trek in the Lake District. Not climbs, but walk. I think that it's hard slog getting him to walk to and from the play ground in our village and DH is in for a shock lol.

How far would your 3yo walk without wanting to go on shoulders/ complaining/ hopping in buggy or backpack carrier

Ha let DH take him for a practise 10k from home Grin

AmelieTaylor · 12/04/2021 22:02

Chocolate button or Nana at the other end, miles.

Daddy there about 100m

Honestly your DH is nuts!!!

People will say their kids do! & some might, but not just out of the blue.

Tell DH that you'll only go if he carries the carrier & DS when DS wants a carry (or cajoles him), but that you will be doing neither.

AppropriateAdult · 12/04/2021 22:03

10k?! Is he insane? My 3yo will walk for maybe 20 minutes before starting to grizzle.

To the end of the road? Honestly, not far. I hope your DH enjoys carrying him 9.5KM.

thenameshastings · 12/04/2021 22:04

DS is 4 and school is 1.2 miles away which we walk each day, he’s fine on the way there but a bit slower on the way home. No way would he do a 10k trek though

AppleKatie · 12/04/2021 22:06

10k? My 6 year old would do it with a couple of rest/snack stops- or he’d prefer a picnic. No picnic you’d probably get some whinging towards the end but he’s capable of it.

At 3? No chance, half that with a nice distracting park in the middle perhaps.

Camomila · 12/04/2021 22:07

The longest DS1 has ever walked in one go is 2h - he's probably been doing that since 3.5

However it was at his pace/climbing trees/looking at pebbles so it was probably only 2 or 3k max Grin

I have a cousin that regularly does all day hikes in the alps with his DC and they were still bringing the backpack carrier when his DS was 3. Their DS is 6/7 now and happily does the whole hike with him (I follow on instagram to look at the scenery)

99victoria · 12/04/2021 22:09

10km is just over 6 miles. At toddler pace, assuming no significant stops, that would take at least 3 hours.

Thatsmycupoftea · 12/04/2021 22:09

No way.

We live in the countryside and are almost daily walkers and my 3 year old can manage about 3k.
My 7 year old can only recently manage over 10k.

SingingWaffleDoggy · 12/04/2021 22:11

My DD will do a 3.5 mile loop walk, but it’s quite ‘fun’ with streams, fields of sheep and forest paths. There’s a really steep stretch that DH will put her in the backpack carrier for. We always take the carrier for snacks and drinks anyway.
However, she will then moan and drag her heels walking 200 metres back from the park.
If he’s that insistent I’d wave him off with a cheery smile and find somewhere with a nice view to enjoy a cup of tea in peace!

^ This, definitely do this!

In fact, drop them 10K from home go home and watch Netflix and see if DH makes it back! Grin

HairyToity · 12/04/2021 22:12

2 to 3 miles if he's having fun with older cousins and dogs, and it's not hilly. Our 3 year old is rubbish with hills, and has to be piggy packed up. He'll run down them though.

Impatientwino · 12/04/2021 22:13

In answer to your question my three (nearly four) year old would probably cope with 5K but not 10!

candlemasbells · 12/04/2021 22:15

Mine on a good day can walk a mile, on a bad day a quarter of a mile. There’s no telling if it’ll be a good day when we leave home. We have more bad days than good.
I’d leave DH to do he walk with DS and have a nice day to yourself.

doublemix · 12/04/2021 22:16

My just turned 3 year old will run around for miles in the woods or at the park, but I still have to take his smart trike on the walk to take eldest to school which is only a mile total there and back as he moans all the way to be picked up. No way would he do 10km.

Sickoffamilydrama · 12/04/2021 22:18

I reckon DS 4 (5 in May) can do 5km at a push a slow wander although some of the time that would involve a shoulder ride.

But Kids have to practice walking we walk a lot to the shops or a circular walk round to the park so they are used to it, although they all still moan at times. Our friends don't really like walking (not judging everyone likes different things) and their kids struggle with less than 1Km I assume cause they just don't do it.

FlyingBum · 12/04/2021 22:20

My 2 year old is what I'd call a "good walker" and has done 3-4 km in one go and regularly does over 5km in a day between school run and dog walks but I'd expect 10km to be beyond him. Even if he did it, it would take a very long time!

EcoCustard · 12/04/2021 22:20

My 3 year old wouldn’t be far off but might struggle with the last mile. we walk about 4.5-5 miles at the weekend and 3 miles most days ( have dogs). We would have a stop though on the longer walks, snack/lunch and drinks. If DH comes along she won’t walk half as far and whinges. All 4 dc walk a long way and always have, the toddler walks for miles too. Appreciate I am lucky with mine, and they seem to be the exception. I always have an emergency pack of sweets in my pocket in case they flounder on the way back Grin

funtimefrank · 12/04/2021 22:21

Christ. I was about to say that mine were excellent walkers at that age (they really were tbh) but 10k? Not a fucking snowballs. A couple of miles if they were having fun and not tired.

ShoesCoatandBag · 12/04/2021 22:21

When mine were that old they could walk about 5km (provided it was flat, interesting and involved a lot of cake).

10km they wouldn’t have managed it without being carried and whinging.

So I’d wave a cheery farewell and let DH take them.

folloyourarro · 12/04/2021 22:21

Managed absolutely fine in a day (and some) when at Disneyland Paris but not sure a straight slog of 10k would peak enough interest to not be bored!

headintheproverbial · 12/04/2021 22:22

Your DH is a fvcking idiot.

Smarshian · 12/04/2021 22:24

My almost 3 yr old maybe 2k? My 4.5 yr old 5k ish. No way would either of them do 10k without being carried/ whinging a lot.

moochingtothepub · 12/04/2021 22:28

We did a memorable 5.5 mile trek when mine were 2&4 (just) dd1 did it all without issue, there was a 2000ft elevation gain too (not U.K.) but dd2 was mostly on exh shoulders, back ache was an issue consequently!

10km is even further, some kids are capable but know your own child

DioneTheDiabolist · 12/04/2021 22:28

DS2 is a great walker and we walk a lot, but he'll only do about 3 miles before whinging.
