Utility room must haves

I'm going to be getting a utility room. It will have in it a washer and dryer and ceiling mounted clothes airer, but other than that I'm not set on what to have.

Another thread has given me an idea - separate the clothes as soon as they come out the drier, so I'm going to have 4 boxes for that.

So what other things do you love in yours or what things do you wish you had or hadn't put in?

sink for hand washing

bathmatty · 12/04/2021 19:51

I also have a big radiator so i can dry clothes in it either on radiator or drying rail

TheSpottedZebra · 12/04/2021 19:52

Must have - space for the laundry baskets as well.
I also have fold out hanging racks. I use them for hanging up just-washed clothes (obvs) and in the BeforeTimes, storing clothes waiting to go to the dry cleaners.

We are about to convert a garage into one! Space for ironing board storage, possibly space for shoes and coats too. I’d like cupboards big enough to house our recycling boxes as well.

That'd be ace. Unfortunately ours will be quite small.

So what other things do you love in yours

My sleeping dog. When we redesigned the kitchen & utility, he got his own space under the worktop.Grin

More obviously and generally applicable, loads of cupboard space.

Cleverpolly3 · 12/04/2021 20:06

My utility has a washing machine and a separate condenser dryer
Also has
My combi boiler
Three wall mounted Coat racks
A sink and drainer
Window that opens
A radiator
Wall mounted cupboards
Xhelves
Ironing board hook
Work top fitted above washing machine and dryer
Three washing baskets
Three double sockets all above worktop

The dog bed if she wants to go in

I couldn’t function without it

Most utility rooms are too small, I'd love a bigger one with room to keep the ironing board up, a second wine fridge, tumble dryer, decent storage for coats, shoes, boots, recycling, sports equipment etc

Retrievemysanity · 12/04/2021 20:07

@dotdashdashdash are you planning on stacking your washing machine and dryer? If not, worth considering as that could free up space.Yes I’m very excited about a proper utility after years of a tiny cupboard!

Aprilshowersandhail · 12/04/2021 20:08

Radio!!

Jericha · 12/04/2021 20:17

Sink and drainer for dirtier jobs like cleaning boots, pet bowls, scrubbing garden stuff

Second fridge. Ours has a door to outside so we have a second fridge. Great for bbq meat or beers in the summer.

If I had more space I'd want a tall cupboard for the mop and vacuum.

Space for cleaning supplies so they don't take up a kitchen cupboard is good.

Ours is tiny but I really like the idea of a drying rack or pulley.

Impatientwino · 12/04/2021 21:18

We have a built in pullout cupboard with two compartments for whites/darks which is great. Love being able to shove it all out of sight.

Lots of electrical sockets at worktop height

We have a tall towel rail instead of a radiator in there which is fab for drying socks/pants/smaller items and can fit absolutely loads on!

Second sink for cleaning muddy/decorating stuff

We also have a big floor to ceiling height cupboard which has tall vases in one part and then all our recycling boxes in the other part. I bloody hate all the recycling hanging around and when we did our utility room it was first on my wish list! Now we just grab the two boxes out and dump them outside every two weeks. I actually measured the boxes before we ordered the cupboards to make sure they would fit!

steppemum · 12/04/2021 21:23

sink.

Our utility room is too small, so I put one in in the back of the garage.
It is fab.
Maybe because of my lifestyle, but I love having a 'dirty' sink.
Football boots, cat's bowls, paint brushes, mop bucket, garden stuff, tools, oily hands from bike punctures and car fixing.

Now none of this goes in the kitchen sink.
Fantastic.

steppemum · 12/04/2021 21:24

and our cat is also fed in the utility room, out of the kitchen

dotdashdashdash · 12/04/2021 21:32

Retrievemysanity yes, will stack them.

It's very small (but better than nothing). Hoping for a tall cupboard for the steam mop & rarely used ironing board. The plus is we've got really high ceilings so the drier rack won't be in the way.

Out of interest, what is "too small"? We're having a large extension and one of the rooms will be a utility. We want to have space for all boots, shoes, and coats, as well as the washer, dryer, extra fridge and space for the hoover, mop, ironing board. Also want cupboards for all pots and pans (currently have a pantry for these). Oh, and a sink!

I'm worried I'll need a huge room!!!

GillBungalow · 12/04/2021 21:42

We have a basement utility room which is never going to be Instagram worthy but has shedloads of storage space. Washer and dryer side by side (with opposite-opening doors), shelves for every person to have their own laundry basket. A hanger for the ironing board and normal iron, space for the steam generator iron. A pulley maid and also high rails for storing bagged winter coats, rarely worn suits/dresses etc. I have a y shaped pole to lift the hangers up and down and I feel like a dry cleaner Grin

No cupboards but shelving for lightbulbs, camping gear, wrapping paper, decorating stuff, dog paraphernalia, cleaning stuff, garden stuff, car wash stuff, Xmas stuff. Brooms, mops etc are hung from one of those wall clip things. Hooks everywhere for hanging things up.
