Where do the Hogwarts teachers live?

I'm rereading Harry Potter for the billionth time and chapter 2 in book 6 is set in Snapes house. So clearly he has a home, but in book 5 where Umbridge is trying to throw out Prof. Trelawny, she says "But where will I go? Hogwarts is my home!" which strongly insinuates that she lives there permanently and has no house of her own.

Hagrid obviously lives there as he's the gamekeeper. But what about everyone else? Do you think they're given the choice when they get a job whether they live there full time or not?

And where do they sleep? Do they have sleeping quarters somewhere? I notice it's never really mentioned in the books about where the teachers sleep. It must be a bit miserable, living in your place of work, even if it is a magical castle.

They all have quarters in the castle, the heads of House quarters are near to the house common rooms/dorms. Some also have houses away from the castle such as Snapes house.

I'll ask my daughter, she'll know.

I think they obviously live there during term time but perhaps they do have a choice when offered the job.

I was always baffled by Snape’s home. It looked like a tiny Coronation st type terrace amongst thousands of other similar houses. It never seemed grand enough or creepy enough. My husband thought it might not be his house, just somewhere he was staying.

autumnboys · 11/04/2021 23:14

DS3 and I had a long convo about this the other day. We think they all have quarters at Hogwarts, but may have homes elsewhere that they use in the holidays.

I think Snape was supposed to come from a poor family which was partly at the root of the bullying he received from James Potter and the others. He was also a half blood and I think his house was in the mugger world not the magical world.

Kanaloa · 11/04/2021 23:16

Presumably Snape’s house was his parents’ and he inherited it. I guess he stayed there in the summer because it would be hard to have Death Eater meetings at Hogwarts.

growinggreyer · 11/04/2021 23:17

I think Snape's house is the one he inherited from his parents but that might just come from fanfic. I was surprised at the time by the house because I was so used to reading about Snape Manor!

eatthepineapple · 11/04/2021 23:23

I have also wondered this! And I don't think they do go home in the holidays either as when Harry is there over Christmas etc they are all still there...?

Howshouldibehave · 11/04/2021 23:23

Yep-this.

All of the teachers would have rooms at Hogwarets with a bedroom/study etc but they may have owned or inherited properties elsewhere.

IndecentCakes · 11/04/2021 23:26

Snape could just apparate there whenever he wanted, though, if he wanted a bit of peace.

AppleKatie · 11/04/2021 23:26

Yes Snapes house at Spinner’s end is his parents house- his father was a muggle, Tobias Snape was quite poor and the home was not happy. Snape was neglected pre hogwarts- or at least this is strongly implied.

During term time the professors have quarters at hogwarts and I suppose they don’t all feel the need to have a home elsewhere.

Trewlawney was on the bones of her arse when Dumbledore took her in and she had no transferable skills/much ability to look after herself. Dumbledore also encouraged her to live at the castle for her own protection (prophecy), but she was unaware of the necessity.

PurpleSunrise · 11/04/2021 23:29

Some definitely sleep there overnight, McGonagall, Snape and Slughorn at least have been woken up in the night, can’t remember which books.

PurpleSunrise · 11/04/2021 23:29

Dumbledore too

IndecentCakes · 12/04/2021 00:55

Yeah, Snape was wandering about in Philosopher's Stone, I think, and definitely in P O Azkaban.

RainbowCrayons · 12/04/2021 03:43

Thinking about it now wouldn't they have liked a home somewhere else and just apparate as close to Hogwarts as the can and walk the rest of the way? Then they could get a break from the children. Clearly teaching is even more of a full time job in the magical world. Not really surprising the staff are mostly/all single, no time. For a personal life at all! Daffodil

safariboot · 12/04/2021 03:51

I assume most staff still have their own homes and just live at Hogwarts during term time.

Hagrid has year-round responsibilities so presumably lives there all the time. Same for the house elves and I reckon Flich. And I'm not sure if Dumbledore has any other home; with his family background I can imagine him owning a house but never using it.

Trelawney lives at Hogwarts for protection, she's probably Voldemort's #3 target (after Harry and Dumbledore).

TeenMinusTests · 12/04/2021 07:41

Thinking of my real life boarding school, heads of houses and the head teacher definitely lived in during term time at least. The head had her own separate bungalow/house in the grounds and the heads of houses had their own apartments within each house. (So the dorms on the same level were much less favoured as you could be heard if noisy or wandering around after lights out). There were also other staff accommodation blocks within the grounds.

The books are written mainly from Harry's viewpoint. He really would have had zero interest in the staffs' living arrangements which is probably why it doesn't come up.

TeenMinusTests · 12/04/2021 07:42

If I were single and teaching at a boarding school, I might well live in for convenience, but buy a house for my retirement somewhere nice and rent it out until then.

Overdueanamechange · 12/04/2021 07:43

According to my son, many have homes in Hogshead.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 12/04/2021 08:00

Could you scrutinise the area on Google maps? (You may have Zoom in)

Sandgrown1970 · 12/04/2021 08:04

I’ve worked in boarding schools and always assumed the Hogwarts staff to be similar in their patterns of residency lol.

In the schools I worked in there was a mix of residential teaching staff and non residential teaching staff (though due to Hogwarts location I assume ALL staff are residential). Residential staff would usually have a flat in each boarding house (so to keep an eye on the boarders as well as teaching staff some would have additional houseparent responsibilities or be solely employed as a houseparent) OR a house or flat in the grounds of the school. If you are residential staff usually most if not all of your wage goes straight in your pocket. You don’t pay for accommodation, utilities or even food. This way most staff were able to buy properties (some even outright in cash) that they’d then rent out and yes, some also already owned property prior to taking up post and inherited property too. You need to make plans for retirement or if the school closed so it makes sense that most residential staff would also own property. Most residential staff would also live onsite during the holidays unless they went to stay with family or went on a holiday. Some would take in student children that weren’t able to go home during the holidays.

I wouldn’t have wanted to work at Hogwarts. Boarders can be tricky and sneaky enough without adding all the magic in!

BlueLobelia · 12/04/2021 08:05

I used to work in a boarding school way back in the day and we had our quarters (bedroom, ensuite and little kitchen/living room) and then whatever homes we had in the holidays (either our own houses etc. ) The younger staff who did not own or rent another home could stay in their quarters. I just assumed it was the same sort of deal.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 12/04/2021 08:07

Same as in muggle world. They live at school. Probably a small en-suite room.

SuperPixie247 · 12/04/2021 08:30

It isn't just living arrangements, what about having a spouse or children?

I'm not a potterhead but I don't remember any of the professors having kids or partner?
