Hayfever. Nothing is working

Woke at 4am with eyes and nose streaming.
Took a supermarket loratadine, no relief. 6 hours later I took a fexofenadine. Still no relief! Going through a box of tissues and nose and eyes are raw. Not sure how I'm gonna get through work tomorrow. Anyone else really suffering?

Fexofenadine worked last year, prescribed by gp. Only developed hayfever last year and I'm in my 40s Sad. This is unbearable!

Try Piriton or Benadryl, both are stronger then loratadine but may make you sleepy so be careful if driving. Otherwise have you tried a nasal spray? There’s several on the market, also Optrex or Opticrom eyes drops will help with itchy eyes. Ask your local pharmacist what they recommend

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 11/04/2021 14:26

I second the nasal spray, I had it really bad last year and anti histamines had no impact. Went to pharmacy and they gave me a nasal spray which helped.

Nasal spray. I have a birch pollen allergy and my house is surrounded by birch trees so I found this out the hard way :-)

Next year try to start the nasal spray a couple of weeks before pollen season - it really helps.

I also use Benadryl eye drops - am in the US though and not sure if you can get them in the UK.

Suffered all my life, nothing seems to work now except for a nasal spray. Speak with a pharmacist

DH suffers badly and he had an injection in 2019. Not available on the NHS so we had to pay roughly £75 but it was so worth it. Instant relief and no symptoms at all for the rest of the hayfever season.

Megan2018 · 11/04/2021 14:37

I have to combi- so allergy nasal spray, antihistimine tablet, decongestant tablet and eye drops. All every day without fail.
Tree pollen is a bitch.

As I’m still BF I can’t take all of these sadly so it’s been a rough few years!

Babymamamama · 11/04/2021 14:37

Can I ask how you arrange the private injection? Sounds a great option.
My advice meantime is Acrivastine which is Benadryl. I seem to be immune to all the other options.

Newchances · 11/04/2021 14:37

Ceitrizine hydrochloride is what I use,no other tablets help. Also hay-fever wipes and haymax

Bul21ia · 11/04/2021 14:38

Boots antihistamine in liquid form OP.

xxlostxx · 11/04/2021 14:39

I've got Mometasone nasal spray off gp, never found it to help much but that's maybe cause I haven't used it consistently enough. Just had a go off that and will keep that going daily.
Will certainly sort out getting Benadryl tablets.

I developed hay fever aged 20, always seems to start around 1 June and last about 6 weeks. Used to try the various types of tablet, tried various different ones, but it didn’t seem to help. Then tried the Beconase nasal spray and it’s brilliant! You need to take it for a few days before it kicks in, and then keep taking it throughout your hayfever season, but for me it makes my symptoms almost zero most of the time.

xxlostxx · 11/04/2021 14:41

Will look in to liquid form antihistamine, heard good results with this. Thanks everyone!

Injection is called kenalog. We just googled a local clinic that offers it and made an appointment online. He did have to travel into the nearest big city though.

Cowbells · 11/04/2021 14:55

I do triple dosing - eye drops, nasal spray and antihistamine tablets as well as Ventolin for the asthma it triggers. If I do all three and eat anti inflammatory foods (lots of cinnamon and turmeric) then the symptoms ease but the Loratidine makes me soooo sleepy. This time of year the choice is feel zonked or spend all day wanting to scratch your eyes and throat with a stick. I spend a fortune on tissues too. And have to apologise for constant sneezing in work Zoom meetings.

MabelPines · 11/04/2021 14:55

I second the recommendation for Ceitrizine hydrochloride OP, you can buy it as own brand hay fever tablets in Sainsbury’s or Asda, it’s squares me away and I suffer very badly with my sinuses and chest from hay fever

Fluffycloudland77 · 11/04/2021 16:56

I’d go back to the dr, otc anti histamines are quite weak.
