Like on Below Deck😃 i cant work out how much it costs and whats with the massive tips at the end. Dont the staff get paid much other wise? Is it lottery winning money?

I love this programme and am currently on series 8. It's such easy watching with a mix of cheese and drama.
I heard them say a couple of times that it's approx 200K USD for a three day charter.
I haven't been able to figure out if the staff get paid a flat wage as well as thw tips but in the US (where majority of the charter guests are from) most of the income for staff is from tips.

EachandEveryone · 11/04/2021 12:33

Don5 know what season 5his is. Its the one on E4 where they seem to be in Italy is it the same route each series? The chef is blinking gorgeous.

Is that the Mediterranean one?
Ive only watched a couple of episodes of that one as it wasn't all available when I watched them. Will catch up with it thought.

Is the chef Ben?

No the locations are all over, it blows my mind that people have the money for this type of travel, as they would have to travel to the country to board the yacht on top of the cost of chartering the yacht. I'm fairly sure that's the kind of lifestyle I should be having but something went wrong somewhere. 🤔😆

I googled last week to try and get an idea of cost. OMG I would need a lottery win that's for sure!! The tips they leave blow my mind, I don't spend that much on a holiday never mind leave it as a tip.

idontlikealdi · 11/04/2021 13:02

I've cheaters a yacht, but it was a bare back charter in Croatia so not quite the same! It was still eye wateringly expensive and we did all the work....

HilaryBriss · 11/04/2021 13:04

I know they don't usually stay for a week but this gives you some idea of the cost - SUMMER RATES (High/Low) €195,000 pw/€180,000 pw

Pearl97 · 11/04/2021 13:11

OMG I love this programme. I still can't get over that the tips are more than I have ever spent on a holiday. Yes it is serious money to charter it!

EachandEveryone · 11/04/2021 13:12

Does that include the food and booze?

I’ve watched all of the various Below Deck’s during lockdown and it’s great TV.

This sort of holiday is only available to the Uber rich. Hundreds of thousands of dollars!

BasinHaircut · 11/04/2021 13:17

I would imagine that anything they could consume food and booze-wise would be more than covered by what they are paying!

celtiethree · 11/04/2021 13:19

You can charter for a lot cheaper than that. Look at companies like Helm where you can charter with a skipper. Can’t remember how much we paid for a skippered week but the bare cost was certainly less than £10k but you then had mooring fees which varied if you were on a remote mooring or on the Riva. You also paid for meals for the skipper and tipped at the end. Food tended to be quite expensive if you chose to pre-order from a specialist supply company we chose to go to a local supermarket before boarding, depending on your itinerary then restaurants varied significantly in price. Never buy fish by weight that was a shocker!!

There was an AMA on here a few weeks back by someone who worked on a superyacht. It was quite interesting

My friend's family charter a yacht for a week every summer. There are about 7 of them in total, plus the crew and staff.
They pay about £30,000 for the week.

Twizbe · 11/04/2021 13:24

I'm sure in the first series they did mention that the $1000 dollar tip from one 3 day charter is more than their monthly wage.

That was one of the stewardesses and I imagine they are lowest paid.

I think the chef and captain probably make better money.

I also saw that Bravo actually charter the boat for the 6 weeks so I imagine the guests shown get a bit of a discount.

It's apparently hard to cast as well because all the crew have to have the appropriate licences and qualifications. It's not as easy as casting for some other reality TV shows

KeyboardWorriers · 11/04/2021 13:31

You can make pretty decently money as senior crew on these yachts. My friends whose husband's are captains all have children at private school etc.

I haven't been on a yacht holiday like that but have been on a similar level holiday (as the guest of a friend) and it was pretty incredible. The staff did say a lot of their guests were horrible to them though, which I found shocking. Watching Below Deck has been a revelation in terms of how awfully some of the guests behave!

TakeYourFinalPosition · 11/04/2021 13:36

I’ve been crew, in my early twenties. I loved sailing - I have a full set of qualifications.

Frenchfancy · 11/04/2021 13:37

We had 2 weeks on a yacht like this paid by dh work at the time. We were supposed to be sharing but spent the first 5 days on our own with 4 crew. It was the most bizarre experience of my life but not necessarily the best. Got picked up from the airport by the captain in full "officer and a gentleman" garb and taken in a stretch limo to the port.

I was 10 weeks pregnant and jet lagged, woke up the first morning at 6am nd went into the kitchen trying to find coffee. I thought it was like an airbnb where you fend for yourself. The "maid" was most surprised to find me when she appeared in her nightdress. She was even more surprised when I offered her coffee.

We had our own chef. 1st day he asked what we wanted to eat,I said "oh a sandwich will be fine" ended up with the best club sandwich I've ever eaten. We spent hours with the crew, dh drinking beer ( they weren't supposed to drink with us but did). There was another yacht with some other colleagues on which followed ours. The crew on that boat were cursing because they were getting all sorts of unreasonable demands and they just wanted to hang out with us. They all kept in touch for a couple of years.

No idea how much it all cost but I was actually relieved when it was all over. We never quite worked out what the motivation was for the trip. There was 1 business meeting which lasted about 2 hours but that was all.

My normal holiday is 2 weeks in a tent and honestly I would rather that than spend another 2 weeks on a yacht (the staff were lovely though, they can join us on the campsite).

newmumwithquestions · 11/04/2021 13:47

I came on to say yes. But no not that kind of yacht! I’m talking little floating caravan with sails type....

Honeyroar · 11/04/2021 13:52

My friend’s sister used to work on one. They’d do the med in summer and the Caribbean in winter. She got a low wage as well as tips. She used to come home for a month in October and buy another house to let out. She is in her 50s now, been home for a decade and not had to work because she has 10 houses with their mortgages paid off! She used to get a lot of movie stars onboard chartering the vessels.

EachandEveryone · 11/04/2021 15:08

Her tips mustve been astronomical 😀

OP posts:
Honeyroar · 11/04/2021 19:06

They were, but she saved a lot because she didn’t have time to spend much money because she was working most of the time and obviously her food and board was included. She’d just come home with a decent deposit - then rent the flat out and have it pay it’s own mortgage.

cost depends on size and location. Lots available for charter. You pay for the whole hire. How you get there is at your cost.

Girasoli · 07/05/2026 07:00

No but DM spent the whole summer on a yacht in the Mediterranean once as a guest for free...when she was 18ish she had a job where she made good friends with her bosses (same age) daughter and so got invited to go along in the summer with them so the DD would have company.

Sadly I have never had any glamorous jobs with perks like that!
