What swimming costume for DS 4?

Stupid question but what should I buy for 4yo DS, for swimming lessons? Last year we went swimming a few times aa as a family (pre pandemic) and DS stood out as the only one in Speedos, the other boys were all in one piece suits with sleeves (rash suits?) But I don't know if that's what he should have lessons in? He's starting swimming lessons soon and I don't want to get it wrong.

Go for longer leg trunks - swimming teachers don't like flappy board shorts because they need to see the kicking action etc

RestingPandaFace · 10/04/2021 08:36

I put DS in a au suit as it keeps him a little warmer when they are standing around. I also think it’s probably more comfortable for the teachers if they are a little more covered.

Thanks for posting this btw lessons start again on Tuesday and I bet he needs a new one again Confused

The last time my child had a swimming lesson was about 18 months ago, but all the boys were in speedos. I’ve only ever seen rash suits used outside, either to protect them against getting sun burnt, or under a buoyancy aid or wetsuit to stop any rubbing.

Trunks, but tight leg ones not flappy board short style.

People often put their children in the all in one uv suit type things because they think they will stay warmer but actually as soon as they are wet they make them colder because of all the wet fabric. So not a good idea for indoor swimming unless it’s one of the proper wet suit insulated things (which is massive overkill by 4!)

DS1 wore skinny leg trunks to swimming lessons at that age. DH says it was about half and half between normal swimming costumes and those warm all in one things.

On a different note, choose the colour carefully so he can still be seen underwater.

Stompythedinosaur · 10/04/2021 10:07

I think once dc are school age they are more likely to be in trunks than suits.

Itsokthanks · 10/04/2021 10:12

I think people put them in the all in one rash style things because they've not got swimming trunks. There's no benefit to wearing them inside. Speedos or tight shorts are more suitable for swimming lessons.

RestingPandaFace · 10/04/2021 10:53

Completely disagree with those saying that there’s no benefit to a rash suit / sun suit indoors.

When I take DS swimming at the same pool where he has his lessons it invariably means loads of standing around in waist high water

I’m loads more comfortable in a lightweight rash vest than just a swimsuit. Why wouldn’t he be more comfortable if I am?

RightOnTheEdge · 10/04/2021 10:58

My ds (8) wears the long skinny leg trunks.
He did insist on a swimming top too because he always felt embarrassed being bare on the top half but most of the boys didn't wear tops.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 10/04/2021 11:27

Shorts style trunks for DS, always in a bright colour so he's easily spotted. He's nine now and a strong swimmer but he's got used to the bright trunks while other kids his age are in black Adidas he's still choosing bright orange dinosaurs Grin I always think as lightweight as possible is best, they need to be able to move freely. Definitely not loose shorts we had to buy some in a hurry once as we'd forgotten his trunks and they really hindered his swimming.

MerryDecembermas · 10/04/2021 16:02

So long trunks but not baggy.. "jammers" is the word that comes up. Look like cropped leggings. Perfect!
Thanks Smile

DD had a thin wetsuit as the pool building was cold. It was a pool of a private secondary school, not a leisure center and I think the water was cooler. She was definately more comfortable in the beginning.

We moved her to normal swimsuits when she could actually swim and warm herself up.

Insertfunnyname · 10/04/2021 16:47

Yes jammers.

Baggy board shorts weigh them down. My boys never wear anything on top and neither do any other boys in their classes.

BogRollBOGOF · 10/04/2021 20:22

Mainly jammers.
Mine wear shortie wetsuits as they get cold easily in the water. There are a couple of others wearing them too.
