Is there any slang that annoys you?

I was wondering if it was just me, I'm curious if theres anyone out there who hates certain slang?
I moved to stoke 2 years ago, my partners family says "is a" for example "is a dog" "is a beaut" "is a hiding" "is a stunner" it really grates on me, the whole time I'm thinking "please stop. Talk normal to my child, stop teaching her improper English" its "she is a" "it's a" ahhh it really annoys me. I use slang but ones like that annoy me.
I also see posts where I'm wondering what the heck its saying, I have to re read it multiple times because theyve missed out words and shortened things. I can understand shortening words such as U, fs etc but geez.

'Get rid'. It just sounds so, well, common, vulgar, basic.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 10/04/2021 00:10

Scouser here. You don't hear it as much now but Girl. It always seems to be said with the ir part proper elongated "Giiiirrrl.

Also hate men calling me mate. It makes me feel really unfeminine and women calling me love makes me feel patronized and talked down to.
You're best off just calling me "Cunt". You wouldn't be wrong. Grin

EvilOnion,
My husband was from Troon, and we lived in Glasgow many years ago and I always remember being called “hen “and I loved it.
Sadly he passed away 9 years ago but I have so many amazing memories of him and our time in Scotland and I hope to visit again soon .

On the Scots front I hate totties/tatties, my family think I'm weird because I insist on saying potato!

I have a friend who "boobfeeds" and that her daughter is "after some boob" when she needs a feed.

I don’t not so much as slang for me but pronunciation drives me mad. I work 7 mikes from home closer to a major city centre and some colleagues pronounce some words so differently,

Eg the word Area I would pronounce A-rea but they pronounce it Eh-rea. It makes me shudder when I hear it.

ColonelPine · 10/04/2021 00:18

I can’t stand “the foreseeable” for “the foreseeable future”. Grr

VeniVidiWeeWee · 10/04/2021 00:30

@2pinkginsplease

But I bet they don't think mikes is a measure of distance.

avamiah · 10/04/2021 00:36

Omg I’ve just remembered white pudding, I never heard of that before I lived in Scotland .lol
We have black pudding so it’s good there is a white pudding .
Hahaha

Claricethecat45 · 10/04/2021 01:23

Not 'slang' exactly but expression

'and then he/she/they TURNED ROUND and said/did'

Just have a vision of people spinning on their base to react or respond...and its everywhere.

Just say or write ' so he/she/they SAID or DID'

Most people really do NOT TURN ROUND....GGGRRRRRRR

Justa47 · 10/04/2021 05:45

@Sophie1029734

Hate the phrase

Back in the day!

TheHoneyBadger · 10/04/2021 05:59

I live with a, and work with many, teenagers.

My child currently says, 'bless' instead of goodbye or goodnight. I now can't think of any examples - I'm so steeped in slang it doesn't stand out anymore? Everything was bear for a while - so bear loud, bear feisty, bear rude!

At the minute what's driving me most eye rollingly insane is the "when?" jokes though I have pulled it back on a couple of kids at school to my and their colleagues pleasure.

DriftGames · 10/04/2021 06:11

@meggamind I'm from Derbyshire and there's a Michael McIntyre sketch where he explains that the word 'the' never made it past J25 of the M1. He's spot on. I grew up 10 mins from J25 and unless I'm at work, where I talk like a normal human, I never use the word 'the' in those situations. I realise how awful I sound but it's how everyone speaks where I'm from! I don't type like it though, I like to think I understand there's a time and a place in which I can speak regionally and where I need to be proper.

@VeniVidiWeeWee someone asking if anything "needs booked" or saying something like "it needs washed", or "it needs fixed" is a Scottish thing. Well I didn't realise it was until it was pointed out here.
"Needs gone" is fb selling slang NOT Scottish.

Chunkymenrock · 10/04/2021 07:43

I've no idea where bin him off came from. It sounds so stupid.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 10/04/2021 07:48

Roasties, yorkies and veggies. Scream.

LookToTreblesGoingTreblesGone · 10/04/2021 07:52

I definitely agree with Yorkies, roasties and veggies.

I'm adding in Jammies. They're pyjamas I tell you, PYJAMAS!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 10/04/2021 08:01

I’d always thought that ‘needs done’, needs washed’ etc. were a Scottish thing that’s lately spread like the wretched COVID, so interesting to hear that they’re not the norm over the border.

Not slang as such, but I do wince at ‘mash’ potato, ‘mince’ beef, ‘pack’ lunch etc.
For crying out loud, add the ED!

You learn something new every day!

So do people really NOT say e.g "the car needs washed"?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 10/04/2021 08:11

I never minded ‘needs washed’ etc. if it came with a Scottish accent - I’d always assumed that it was a sort of dialect thing - same as an Irish friend who says e.g. ‘I’m just after putting the dinner in the oven.’

I rather like a bit of dialect.

IDontCarryOnLikeAPorkChop · 10/04/2021 08:38

Someone on here quite regularly uses 'fuck him off' which I find even more annoying.

No, that’s just wrong!

The car needs to be washed.
The car needs a wash.
