Boring Gas Meter Question (getting it replaced?)

Our gas meter is set on the ground outside the front of our house. It is within a brown plastic box, set into the ground, with a sloping lid. Anyway, the lid is bust (the plastic has gone brittle, its a very sunny spot, and has cracked) and the box fills up with water when it rains. Which can't be good for the gubbins of the meter stuff.
My question is, how do we get it replaced, who is supposed to do the work, and whose responsibility is it. Can anyone help with their experience? Energy supplier says they deal with the meter itself, not the box.
TIA (if anyone can be bothered to answer the dullest question ever)

Well the box will be the responsibility of whoever owns or manages your home. The meter itself is the responsibility of whichever company you have a contract with for gas supply.

As above - the box around the meter is the responsibility of the home owner or landlord.

The box is the homeowner’s responsibility. If you google meter boxes you can usually find replacement parts. Ours is set on the side of the house & a replacement door cost £40 recently.

Oh, but am I allowed to dig up the existing one myself?

Well assuming you are the owner occupier, yes. Just be careful not to damage the meter or the pipes.
