Well I do it a lot and I bloody wish I didn't. Just wiped my cup of tea out whilst in a zoom call with mum. Smashed mug and tea everywhere!!! 😒 bloody brilliant.

I'm Italian, I always wave my arms around. DS1 does it too even though he was born in the UK and mainly speaks English.

I broke a phone once waving my arms about...it wooshed through the air and smashed. Blush

Deathraystare · 09/04/2021 14:01

Yes me. I only really thought about it when I had surgery on my left hand and was told to sit on it. I found it hard to talk!

Hadalifeonce · 09/04/2021 14:02

I do, don't think I could talk if someone tied my hands together.

ShutUpAlex · 09/04/2021 14:03

No and I hate talking to people who do sorry!

JoysexrenovationFingerFumble · 09/04/2021 14:04

I shouldn’t laugh OP Wink

I don’t do it in English but I do in my second language. It’s like I don’t believe that I’m really making sense and need to act out the words as well Grin

eddiemairswife · 09/04/2021 14:06

I hate it, and it often appears to be youngish women on TV who do it.

FlibbertyGiblets · 09/04/2021 14:08

Setting the scene here.
Striding down broad stairs, like say the Science Museum (wasn't but anyway) talking and did a yay with arms up and fingers forked. Smote the person behind horribly, I think a finger went up his nose, criiiiinge.

stodgystollen · 09/04/2021 14:08

Apparently you normally do it much more when speaking in your second language. I very rarely speak to native English speakers anymore, so I find I copy and wave my hands round enormously, whatever language I'm speaking! And yes, I've broken mugs doing it too

TheIncredibleBookEatingManchot · 09/04/2021 14:16

I do all the time. I've spilled drinks everywhere, whacked people with pool cues and hit myself in the face.

I can't help doing it. I don't even realise I'm doing it most of the time, until something goes wrong.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 09/04/2021 14:25

You’ve reminded of the scientist Magnus Pyke who was famous for arm waving and whirling whilst trying to explain things on TV in the 70s.

iklboo · 09/04/2021 14:29

It's a known fact that if I had my arms tied behind my back speaking would be nigh on impossible. I make Italian men look like those people who pretend to be statues. I even do it when I'm on the phone.

MargaretThursday · 09/04/2021 14:39

I do. I try to stop it though.

BerniesMittens · 09/04/2021 14:55

My Nan used to talk with her hands but she put it down to working in a noisy environment when she left school (she was an excellent lip reader, too). I also talk with my hands and point to things, “is the cola in the fridge?” while pointing at the fridge. Some conversations are like I'm directing traffic! Grin

mamaduckbone · 09/04/2021 15:12

Me. I'm a teacher and have more than once nearly given an unsuspecting child a black eye or thrown a pen half way across the room. When they do their end of term skit of all the teachers it's always one of my 'things'.

Greybeardy · 09/04/2021 15:17

I used to. Accidentally punched a nun in the face once though and felt so terrible (and certain I’d go to hell) that I’ve learnt to control it!

Sh05 · 09/04/2021 15:18

The Duchess of Cambridge does a little and she always looks so animated. It's not a bad thing, smashed phones and cups excluded.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 09/04/2021 15:21

I do but I'm Hispanic (first language is Spanish).
I would find it very hard to communicate without hand movements.
It's funny that my English husband does now. I suppose it has rubbed off on him.
