Back pain won't go away

mayaknew · 08/04/2021 20:09

I've had lower back pain for over a month. Struggling to bend, lift, or getting up from sitting position.

I've been to GP who prescribed cocodamol. Takes the edge off but doesn't really help with mobility.

Been to a chiropractor who did a great job at cracking my neck but hasn't done anything for my lower back.

I've tried ice packs, stretches, massage gun.

I cannot get rid of this pain 😫

Any advice would be much appreciated 🙏

I'm in the same situation but had mine for a week. Prescribed cocodamol and chiropractor appointment booked. It's improved but it hasn't gone and I'm still struggling with mobility. I find a hot water bottle on my back helps .

bbbbbbbbbccccc · 08/04/2021 20:23

Did the chiro not stick you on the special bed and do some lower back stretches and massage? Maybe time to go to the docs for a referral to have a scan?

bbbbbbbbbccccc · 08/04/2021 20:24

I had a horrible reoccurring stretched ligament problem oh my god the pain was horrendous

Go back to the doctor and ask to be referred for an MRI to see what's causing the pain.

mayaknew · 08/04/2021 20:26

No he just cracked my neck and top of my back. He wasn't really interested in my lower back when I kept talking about it he brushed it off and just kept talking about my neck. I went twice and I'm not going back again

Try tennis ball massage to ease out any trigger points - look for videos on YouTube. Also gentle heat (bath, hot water bottle) and maybe moderate alcohol (so says my GP). If that doesn't help, I'd try the chiropractor again and also see your doctor.

PainAgain · 08/04/2021 20:28

Just saw that you're not seeing the chiropractor again! Definitely don't see anyone who doesn't listen...

mayaknew · 08/04/2021 20:28

I'm only in my 30s as well so I shouldn't really have any wear and tear as such. And I haven't injured it. I am overweight though.

I've got an appointment with my gp again next week for contraception so I'll need to speak to her again about it. I'm in agony

Physio. Wheat bag. Pain relief. Keep moving gently. Change position between sitting, lying , standing frequently. Hope it improves soon

ChiefBabySniffer · 08/04/2021 20:34

Op what triggers your back pain? For me it's putting stuff in the trolley and then loading them on the conveyor and then putting them in the damn trolley and then putting them in the car. Basically mine is caused by very poor core strength. Apparently I need to plank more and work on my core.

Vickles20 · 08/04/2021 20:35

Ditto. Ok. So book a private physio appointment. I did 8 weeks ago. Best thing I did. Also saw my Osteo twice. No good.
The physio diagnosed it (left facet joint spasm). He treated me massage/acupuncture. He then showed me 4 exercises to do a few times a day.
CoCodamol made me constipated and made me drowsy. Gp also diagnosed Naproxene (muscle relaxant). Despite me begging. She said she cannot refer me for MRI. The only people she is referring for one is for people who are extreme agony/will need an operation on their back.
I find hot water bottles helped. And the exercises he gave me strengthened the area. I saw him
once a week for 3 weeks (£50 per 1 hr). Then once every 3 weeks. By 7 weeks I had improved greatly and virtually back to normal
My Gp recommended the physio. She said not to do nhs one as it’d just be emails, no direct contact
Best thing I did

fairydustandpixies · 08/04/2021 20:36

Had mine for 30yrs so far. Multiple MRI scans and medication and rehab/physio. Now told I can have surgery but I've no way of getting to the nearest spinal hospital 150 miles away as I won't be able to walk or drive for many weeks after the procedure and live alone. Good luck OP, prepare to get used to it.

How low? I’ve just been to a physio today and the problem wasn’t my back or sciatica it was my sacroiliac joint she gave me a couple of exercises to do and the relief has been immense, after 3weeks of pain I can almost walk pain free.

I’d book a physio apppointment

Oh @mayaknew what a pain, literally. Sounds like it could be sacroiliac. After years of the same, exacerbated further by really poor short hamstrings, I am now addicted to my foam roller and Pilates. Definitely recommend physio, I have a weak bum cheek as well which exacerbates the problem too. Would never have known that if not for the physio.

Sameoldconstellations · 08/04/2021 20:47

Another recommendation for a physiotherapist. I couldn't believe how much my back pain improved after about three weeks of doing the daily exercises (stretches) recommended by my physio. I saw him for a first appointment where he asked about the pain and put me in a few positions to see where I juddered (to pinpoint the weakness/injured muscles). Then he printed out half a dozen specific exercises for me to do and I had a couple of follow up appointments. My pain reduced by about 90% within the three weeks.

Now (years later) I like to do the "pilates for back pain" 30 minute routine on the NHS website but I would recommend you don't do anything off your own bat until you've seen the physio, you don't want to make anything worse by doing the wrong thing. But I find pilates great for improving flexibility, motility and strength, and I always feel much looser (in a good way, as in not all right) after a good pilates session.

Sugarcube84 · 08/04/2021 20:50

This is where my pain was too, get a private physio appointment. I’ve improved by 70% after one session. I’ve also been advised to start Pilates after I’ve recovered to strengthen my core which is weak, my back it seems is good and flexible and a strong core will help to reduce the risk of back problems in the future.
SM33 · 08/04/2021 20:54

Try an osteopath. Husbands back went during lockdown and he had Zoom appointments with an osteopath that really sorted the issue.
I use this whenever my back is bad:
www.nhs.uk/conditions/nhs-fitness-studio/chronic-back-pain-pilates-exercise-video/
Combined with lots of walking.

RandomMess · 08/04/2021 21:14

Find a recommended osteopath!!

It could be a number of things but osteopaths are still doing hands on treatments. Mine does acupuncture as well - utter bliss!

expectopelargonium · 08/04/2021 21:23

Forget the chiropractor - see an osteopath instead.

Vickles20 · 08/04/2021 21:24

I’ve been having this lower back spasm for 16 years since my first child was born. I’ve had 3 other kids since. And have been morbidly obese.
I’ve been seeing the Osteo for 8 yrs and he has never actually pinpointed it... the physio pinpointed and diagnosed it within 20 mins. I was on the treatment bed and he was manipulating it straight away and showing me the 4 exercises to strengthen the exact area.
The Osteo provides relief. But never ever diagnosed it or even pinpointed the area.
Seriously. Get an in person appointment with a private physio. Get better pain killers. Get an actual diagnosis and then exercises to strengthen the area. Best thing I ever did.

I have SI dysfunction following pregnancy and was going to suggest this too. I get flare ups every now and then, naproxen is better than co codomal and rest, unfortunately.
