Smelling Almonds

LODReturn · 08/04/2021 11:38

For the last few days I keep smelling almonds (like a marzipan smell) despite the fact that I am not near anything that could smell like this.

It isn't specific to a room - I scan smell it at home, in the car & in the office. I haven't changed washing powder, shower gel, deodorant etc. so it's not related to any of those things.

I did have my Covid injection a couple of days ago. I'm trying to rack my brain to remember if I could smell it before then or not but can't recall. Could it be a side-effect related to the vaccine?

It is starting to annoy me now - I'm not a massive fan of sweet smells!

Any thoughts?

Pregnancy test? If you are female x

Isn’t that the smell of arsenic? Is someone trying to murder you in an Agatha Christie novel?

AnExcellentWalker · 08/04/2021 11:56

Migraine? Do you have a headache or any other symptoms of anything at all? I can smell toast before a migraine starts.

NutellaEllaElla · 08/04/2021 11:57

I've heard that is the smell of Arsenic too!

Probably a sinus infection. A mild one. I smell sulphur for weeks on end when I get them.

Very occasionally phantom smells can be a symptom of a brain tumor, stroke or epilepsy.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 08/04/2021 12:11

Almonds is cyanide, but I very much doubt it’s that!

shutterteal · 08/04/2021 12:11

Our new fabric is supposed to smell of lavender, but it's made everything I've washed smell of marzipan. Could it be that?

KatharinaRosalie · 08/04/2021 12:16

a friend just reported a change in sense of smell after covid jab, unfortunately less pleasant than almonds

Cyanide, Sparkling Cyanide. But yes, this is clearly the most obvious answer. Wink Or quite possibly any one of the other suggestions.
PatriciaHolm · 08/04/2021 12:20

I am both perturbed and amused by how many of us (me included....) immediately thought - cyanide! Someone is trying to murder you in an absurdly complicated and 1950s way!

LODReturn · 08/04/2021 12:29

Well I am in the middle of a divorce & still sharing the same house as STBXH so you never know about the cyanide poisoning... (highly doubt it though - divorce is amicable & although he'd walk away with a fortune, I don't think he'd want the kids full time Smile)

Most likely related to the vaccine then - just glad it's more pleasant than the smell @KatharinaRosalie friend ended up with! Hope it goes soon as I keep thinking there is cake nearby...

Check it’s not coming from your breath, can be a sign of diabetes.

InglouriousBasterd · 08/04/2021 12:33

You don’t have any infections do you? The bacteria pseudomonas is known to smell like almonds - no cuts or anything?

LODReturn · 08/04/2021 12:43

@InglouriousBasterd - no infections that I'm aware of. Not even a paper cut at the moment!

I am tired (combination of not sleeping well, being anaemic & have just come on) & have waves of slight light headedness (not unusual as I have low blood pressure). Wonder if that might have something to do with it.

There is always a feint smell but then a I get a really strong wave of it!
