Self catering 7 nights with £100 spending money

Urgh. Booked 7 nights in Bridlington for two adults (me and my mum). Going April 19th. I'm on benefits at moment and have been saving since December for petrol/spending money. Had £300 saved. Now my bloody car has had to have a job done on it and it's taken £190 of that £300. Absolutely do not want to cancel the holiday as, like majority of the country, we are desperate just to get away and have a change of scenery!

We are going 175 miles away. That'll take most of money on petrol there and back. Suggestions/hints/tips on how to make our money stretch!? Will take content of our friges and cupboards with us!

THIS IS NOT A BEGGING FOR MONEY THREAD!!!

What would you do if you were at home and not on holiday ? Do you have things in you could take? How much will petrol cost?

I’m crap with money but say I had £60/£50 I’d have

Breakfast:
Porridge, toast etc (quid for each)

Dinner
Sandwiches every day, can make a picnic and go for a long walk or have a snacky dinner

Tea
A combination of pasta/jacket potatoes/soup/ quid pizzas for a treat

I’d put £10 aside for an ice cream/portion of chips on a beach as well if that’s possible. And take whatever you can out of the cupboards with you

Oh god I’ve just reread and seen you’ve said you’ll take the contents of the fridge with you. Sorry!

Whitney168 · 08/04/2021 12:17

Do have any decent stuff that is now surplus to requirements that you could sell on Facebook Marketplace to get some cash in quickly, so you can actually enjoy your holiday?

PuzzleMonkeyMum · 08/04/2021 12:17

Ok I’ve reread again and realised you’re not at all asking for what food to have on the cheap 🙈. I’ve been on nights and it’s affecting my brain!
So I’ll change my answer:
If you have any board games take them, or at least a pack of cards
Look for free things to do, nothing that you really have to drive too because of the petrol
Plan picnics
Sit on the beach with a bag of chips
Will you have a tv? Plan a movie night
Enjoy the change of scenery, I went away for a few days between lockdowns and didn’t really do a lot, we went for a walk every day, played board games, watched telly and just enjoyed not staring at the same four walls!

There’s an Aldi in Brid which is a short drive out of town or you could walk there from the town centre if you’ve got decent legs for walking! Also a big Morrison’s and a Farmfoods in the same area so you should be able to shop nice and cheaply. Plenty of chip shops which will do a portion of chips cheaply for a walk along the seafront - that’s a nice couple of hours for not much cost. You can also walk up to Sewerby - you have to pay to get into the grounds but not really worth it if you’re counting pennies. The coast walk is lovely and all free. There are lots of arcades if they’ll be open for 2p pusher machines. If you’re not bothered about pubs etc I think it’s completely doable.

I'm presuming she will.share petrol costs. There are lots of lovely walks around there. I would probably just budget in for a drink and cake if I wanted to stop at a cafe and take picnics out on walks each day. Flamborough Head is really nice and not so far.

Take a flask and picnic set with you, so that you can take food out with you when you go out for the day.

If you want ice cream/ice lollies - buy from Iceland etc and keep in the freezer at your accommodation.

From now, start researching things to do so that you can plan what you may want to spend your money on eg entrance tickets or a nice meal out. You can sometimes get discounts if you book in advance.

Eating out for lunch is often cheaper than dinner, so eat out then.

Take books, magazines or puzzles with you to keep you entertained.

Pack some beauty products and have a mini spa evening (you can make products using items you have at home).

Have a lovely time.

I'd plan to have picnics and keep the cash for ice creams/ chips on the beach. Much cheaper to buy a box of icecreams at the supermarket though A couple of bottles of wine for the evening.

What would you have done if you’d had the £300? What do you like to do on holiday?
I’d probably pick one or two days to visit a paid attraction if there was something I’d wanted to do, and fill the other 4 or 5 days with beach walks/ picnics.
Say £30 for petrol, that leaves £80. So, 2x £10 days out (or 1x £20) leaves £60. So £10 a day for coffee and cake in a cafe/ fish and chips on the beach/ 2 or 3 drinks in a beer garden/ cinema. Plenty of walks/ picnics and sightseeing. Other than treats, take food from home as you suggested.

Howmanysleepsnow · 08/04/2021 17:50

(Obviously I’m budgeting for 6 days/ 7 nights and assuming the two end days are just travelling.)

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 08/04/2021 17:54
  1. Take your usual food shop (no additional spend on top of what you would spend at home)
  2. Take clothing suitable for walking in all weather
  3. Take board games etc for the evenings
BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 08/04/2021 17:56

Are you paying for your mum while there or will she bring her own spends.

helpfulperson · 08/04/2021 18:01

If the weather is ok it is a fantastic place for people watching! Take a flask, find a bench and watch the world.
