When can I give ds more calpol?

Ds is 2 years old and had a temp of 39/40 all day.
He's had 4 doses of calpol, some was spat out but I'm unsure how much. Doses were given at 7am,12noon,4pm and 8pm. His temp is still high, so I need to wait until 7am until his next dose?

ring 111

Do you have any kids Nurofen; it's often better at bringing down temperatures. You can double up with calpol and it tends to last longer so better for overnight.

I would call 111 for advice on the Calpol. I would also book a Covid test for them and isolate the household until the result is known.
I hope they're ok OP.

Paracetamol can be given 4 times in a 24hr period, and ibuprofen if you have it 3 times in a 24 hour period- so you can alternate them and give one every 4 hours, which means it's always 8 hours in between doses of the same medicine- if that makes sense?

Give him ibuprofen and book a Covid test

hogu · 07/04/2021 23:59

No I don't have any ibruprofen.
Had a covid test this morning, we are waiting on a result

Could you pop a post on your Facebook asking if anyone's got some ? It would be the best solution overnight

hogu · 08/04/2021 00:00

I've just realised I've been giving him 5ml when he's allowed 7.5ml now he's 2. Does that mean I can give him another dose as I've been under medicating him???? 🤞🏼

@notapizzaeater No chance of anyone I know having any, plus we are self isolating pending a test result so I couldn't even go get any

If his temp is hitting 40 you need to be ringing 111 regardless of COVID testing. That's getting dangerously high and he may have something else going on that requires urgent medical treatment.

How is your son OP?

Conditionconditioncondition · 08/04/2021 09:12

If a temperature isn’t being managed through medication, call 111.

Chances are it’ll be absolutely fine, but that is quite a long time to have a temp that high that isn’t coming down

hogu · 08/04/2021 09:19

Typically 20 minutes after calling 111 it came down to 38.4 and now it's returned to normal! Thank god!

If you have a child of a certain age and his dose is 7.5 ml you can give 30mls over the course of the day. 4-6 hours between doses. Also you can give kids ibuprofen with the paracetamol, either together, or space them out so you are giving something at regular intervals. Provided you don't give an excess amount, you can usually keep on top of fevers. It's important to give extra fluids.
