How do you get rid of confidential letters?

I used to take mine to work and put them in the confidential waste bin, but I can’t really do that now!

Was thinking of a shredder or even just a stamp to cover addresses - what do you do? I’ve let it all pile up so now I have two bags for life stuffed with letters that I need to get rid of.

Shredder.

This is ours, just an Argos own-brand one but it's done well.

Large stacks do take a while, it says 10 sheets but really you want less at a time, and it's loud. Oh and if you use it to munch CDs it makes them into sharp shards so you want to tip them straight into the wheelie bin.

Light barbecue and fill with papers, drink wine, put more paper on, drink more wine... repeat,

Afishcalledwonderful · 07/04/2021 22:04

@JackieTheFart yeah! I squeeze out as much water as I can. I'm in a flat so no garden for a burner. Might get round to buying a shredder at some point 😆

LondonStone · 07/04/2021 22:11

As some other people have said, I tear off all the bits with details on and pulp them into unreadable lumps with water and put that in the bin. Then I just recycle the main part of the letter.

I'm loving some of these ideas!

Don't blame you @ChardonnaysPetDragon, hardly the most interesting or pressing topic!

Sorry OP, it was just that while I want to help you with the make of my trusty shredder, I physically cannot move from the sofa.

Shredders have been very much a Lockdown Discussion topic in my household, we already killed one with exhaustion,

Oblongsquare · 08/04/2021 03:29

The John Lewis shredder is good. Lidl ok but broke eventually.

lydia2021 · 08/04/2021 03:35

I shred mine with a Fellowes shredder. Cost about 60 pounds. Then mix with compost for garden pots.

avamiah · 08/04/2021 03:40

I just tear them up and put them in random bins when I’m out.

MixedUpFiles · 08/04/2021 03:57

Used to drop in the office bin.

I hand tore some papers and binned them with the used kitty litter for disposal.

We finally broke down and bought a shredder.

LittleBearPad · 08/04/2021 08:46
@LittleBearPad I can’t be arsed cutting the address out of them all. If I could shred them in batches that’d be ok.

I might be a bit over cautious as my dad was a victim of identity theft years ago.
Yes but that’s because you’ve built up a backlog. Doing it as you go would be easy.

I’d chuck all the junk mail (and everything else) in the recycling. There’s very little I receive that’s actually confidential - everything is online.

DartmoorChef · 08/04/2021 08:48

I just tear them up into small pieces and put in the general waste
