Best anti pull lead for dogs??

I have just been on a FUCKING NIGHTMARE of a walk with my chunky Cocker spaniel. He pulled me over and I fell in the mud, he knocked me over, he jumped at everyone and their dogs, he's taken the skin off my hands he was pulling so much on the lead. I couldn't let him off the lead because there were too many toddlers/prams/people that were clean. I simply could not hold him - and that's in a harness that is meant to stop him pulling.

It's not his fault, he's young and enthusiastic and in general he's very good and we spend a lot of time training him on the lead. But today was a new walk, new mud and I simply couldn't hold him.

I would appreciate any suggestions for anti pull leads/harnesses. Imagine that you're looking for something suitable for a horse and you should be on the right track 😂

I can walk two wolfhounds on dogmatics!

Have you tried a Halti head collar? Halti leads are very comfortable on the hands too, 2m with double clasps so you can attach to collar/head collar and the chest harness.

I feel your pain, op. I liked the Stop pull harness from Pets at Home, for my 2 german shepherds. Believe me, I tried a few, and one dog literally ate a very expensive Halti whilst wearing it, so speak from experience!

This Halti training lead as they do flatter ones that aren’t as soft.

Train it to walk better. I am sure you are but a pulling dog is a pain. I have managed to train mine with a combination of dog classes and treats/bribes for walking nicely.

Also played with him before a walk so he’s not raring to go. If he’s ‘over threshold’ the walk doesn’t happen.

I use a Beaphar head collar

Pic or it didn't happen!

Our hooligan had a Halti... Until last week. New one on order..
She chewed it - my fault she was unsupervised for less than 2 mins.

Another vote for Halti.
They might fuss at first, but will soon get the hang.
Halti halts them enough for walking nicely on lead training to commence.

Hi OP. I wouldn't spend any money on fancy dog leads / harnesses. We've been through all of that with our dogs and they're expensive! We now use a traditional slip lead made into a figure of eight. Essentially it gives you more control over the dog's head to be able to guide them away from exciting things like squirrels and discarded food etc. Here's a video on how to loop it -

Canni collar, the only thing which work for us with 10stone dog who had never been socialised before we adopted him.

No pics as was a while ago now but I can show you a picture of the accused, and you can decide if he was guilty or not Chocolateismakingmefat

I use a front fastening harness for mine. Because the lead attaches at the front of the chest any attempt to pull just results in the dog facing the wrong way as they pull themselves around.. Works a treat.

G3ntlemanJ · 07/04/2021 16:54

Thanks all, I will definitely investigate all the suggestions. And Cat I do actually have a slip lead so I'll try that one next time.

This is him, post-hose down.

Fairy I can def see a smug grin there!

Is there a local dog trainer who can help?
Don’t want to be that person but it really helped us with on our lovely puppy and walks are much more enjoyable now we aren’t being dragged about

What @TTCat39 suggests. I can walk 3 springers on a finger each, it’s made life so much easier and walks much nicer, tho mine aren’t on the lead except between car and park entrance. Honestly, it’s blissful! You might just want the extra clip to attach it to a collar because if they go backwards, the figure of 8 can slide off.

I found the Halti rides up into the eyes and they can still pull with the canny collar, plus both are expensive and you already have a sliplead.

LizziesTwin · 08/04/2021 15:23

We have gentle leader leads, work well with a 25kg & a 15kg dog.

TTCat39 · 08/04/2021 15:46

Oh gosh yes @Brigante9 I should have mentioned the Houdini escape tricks possible. We use a small (not climbing strength) caribiner to clip the metal loop of the slip lead to the metal loop on the collar, just to be safe.

Iamblossom · 08/04/2021 15:57

Halti works great on my lab, although he does try and scrape it off at any given opportunity.

Can't walk him on a lead without it though, he can easily have me off my feet and has done several times.
